Goodness Gardens Chives Recall: Listeria Contamination

Fears of listeria contamination have resulted in the recall of Goodness Gardens chives in nine states.

The chives recall was announced on May 10 by the FDA after testing by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection detected Listeria monocytogenes in one lot of Goodness Gardens chives. However, there have been no reports of food poisoning liked to the recalled chives.

The recall affects Goodness Gardens chives sold in 0.25 oz. and 2/3 oz. clamshell containers, as well as in 1 lb. bags and 1/2 oz. twist tie bunches. All of the recalled chives have a UPC of 0 21985 20005 6 and a lot number of 0201111 with a date of 5/6/11. The chives were distributed in Alabama, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

Company officials say they believe it is unlikely that any of the chives remain on store shelves, but if they do remain then retailers should remove them.

Listeria infections, also known as listeriosis, pose a particular risk for children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. For pregnant women, illness from Listeria bacteria can cause miscarriages and still births. The fatality rate associated with listeriosis is about 25%.

Blood tests are usually required to diagnose listeriosis, which can be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of listeriosis include muscle aches, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, severe headaches and fever. If the bacteria spreads from the intestines to the bloodstream and nervous system, it could cause meningitis and other complications.

The company urges consumers who have the recalled chives not to consume them and to return the chives to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can call Goodness Gardens, Inc. at 1-845-355-4757.
