Ford Fuel Injector Leaks Lead to Recall Due to Engine Fire Risks: NHTSA

Ford Fuel Injector Leaks Lead to Recall Over Engine Fire Risks NHTSA

Ford has issued a recall for 694,271 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs, due to defective fuel injectors that may leak gasoline onto hot engine surfaces, creating a serious risk of vehicle fires.

The U.S. National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the Ford Bronco Sport and Escape recall on July 14, after receiving multiple reports of fuel injectors cracking and leaking gasoline into the cylinder head.

Officials are warning that leaking fuel can escape through a drain hole in the engine and pool near ignition sources, further increasing the risk of a fire. This accumulation of gasoline near hot components makes the defect especially dangerous, even when the vehicle is parked or turned off.

While no accidents or injuries have been reported, Ford’s investigation has identified at least eight instances of customers reporting fires emanating from under the hood.

The current recall affects:

  • Certain 2020 through 2022 Ford Escape vehicles
  • Certain 2021 through 2024 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles

According to the recall chronology report (PDF), Ford previously issued field actions in November 2022 and March 2024, to update engine control software and fuel tubing for related issues. A separate recall in March 2025 involved nearly 34,000 vehicles, with similar fuel injector problems that caused four Ford vehicle fires.

Further investigation revealed that corrosion may also contribute to injector cracking. On July 15, Ford’s review committee approved the new safety recall (PDF). However, a long-term fix is still in development.

Safety officials advise owners to watch for fuel odors inside or outside the vehicle, as well as dashboard warnings. In the event of a fire, signs may include smoke or flames from the engine compartment or underbody.

Customer notification letters will begin mailing on August 18. Dealers will update engine control software to detect fuel injector leaks as an interim fix. A second letter will be sent when a final remedy is available.

Ford’s number for this recall is 25S76. Customers may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or contact Ford Motor Company’s contact for this recall, Dusty Gardner, who may be reached by email at dusty.gardner@dot.gov.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-275-9171), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Ford Fuel System Recalls

Ford has faced a series of fuel system-related issues throughout the past year, prompting multiple large-scale recalls.

Earlier this month, more than 850,000 additional Ford vehicles were recalled after the company received at least 1,860 warranty claims related to fuel pump issues that could lead to engines stalling.

In addition, nearly 300,000 Ford Super Duty trucks were recalled at the beginning of this year due to fuel pump failures caused by biodiesel deposit buildups.

I would like to join the lawsuit because i have 2 2024 ford bronco sports that are being recalled with no remedies! I’m still paying mortgage on both of them with no remedies

I bought a used 2020 ford escape in July 2023. Salesman never disclosed the recall document in glove compartment until I found it a day later after purchasing car. Car still had a warranty up to 60,000 miles for which I purchased it at 30,000 miles on it. I’ve had for two years. If I knew about that recall before signing papers I would’ve never bought the car. Disception by the dealership!!! At 58,000 miles my car started having problems with the AWD module. Ford refuses to buyback even though the AWD issue occurred still under the 60,000 warranty. The fuel injector issue from what the internet says has been going on since 2022. But this car had recalls since the day it came off the assembly line in 2019 when it was being built. I have all the evidence of the past recalls. This car should’ve never been put on the market to sell as new nor be sold several times as used with all these issues. Plus my car was built in Louisville Kentucky for which I guess that plant built crsp vehicles. The AWD module could cost 3,000.00 to fix. I can’t afford that. And there are others having the same issue yet ford won’t put a recall for that too. These cars all that are effected should never been put to sell as new until cars were 100% clear of any defects. Because when car was new owner got recalls for issues. And once that person traded it in ad used, recalls continued even then. There’s no need for this. We spend thousands of dollars to buy a reliable vehicle to then spend even thousands of more dollars for defects. Is this country going to hell with greedy people and building things that are garbage. I’ve notified ford, BBB, attorney generals office in Maine and I can’t catch a break. No one wants to help me get justice. Instead I have to have a car to get to doctors and I’m putting my life at risk driving this car around when these fuel injectors could cause a fire, putting me at risk to get severely hurt or die. That ain’t happening. But I got no choice. Ford should buyback a lot of these cars no matter if warranty has expired. My warranty was still intact when in 2024 ford sent out recalls, but here it is 2025 and still no fix. I plan to sue the dealership for even selling me the car and never disclosing the car had a recall. How the hell do they get the right to sell a defective vehicle!!! That’s against the law!!!! I wish I had looked thru the car beforehand before signing the papers and not knowing if I could return car after having it for a day, then I wouldn’t be stuck with this lemon and putting my life at risk. Life sure does suck for me and a lot of people going thru the same situation. It’s just not right. Wish we could all take the car companies (ford, Kia, etc..) who have defective vehicles. Just ain’t right at all !!!!!

How nice! My ford escape is apart of this recall. So not only is it completely broke down in our driveway due to transmission issues, now it’s a danger just sitting out there! How exciting! The dealership knew our car was defective (I have ample evidence). Hadn’t even had our car a full year. Wonder how ford plans to fix the recall in our driveway or do they expect us to drive it in limp mode to the dealership to have this issue fixed?! Beyond livid!

I would like to be part of the class action lawsuit I also have a Ford expedition have that same fuel injected problem
