Inhaling Nitrous Oxide Linked to Increasing Number of Injuries, FDA Warns

Federal regulators are warning Americans about the serious health risks associated with inhaling nitrous oxide gas, which has become increasingly popular among teens and young adults, but can cause serious and potentially life-threatening side effects.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert on March 14, indicating that there has been an increase in reports of severe adverse events associated with inhaling nitrous oxide gas from various different brands and sized canisters, including incidents of asphyxiation, loss of consciousness, paralysis and even death.

Nitrous oxide is a colorless and odorless gas, which is often used to manage pain during dental procedures, and as a food processing gas for whipped cream and other foods. Some companies also sell the gas in various flavors, like strawberry and watermelon.

However, it is also used recreationally to induce short-lived feelings of relaxation or euphoria. The gas is sold under several brand names but is commonly referred to as “whippets” or “laughing gas.”

The FDA indicates misusing nitrous oxide gas or using it recreationally can lead to serious side effects because it disrupts the oxygen flow to the brain. Other side effects can include abnormal blood counts, asphyxiation, blood clots, frostbite, headache, lightheadedness, limb weakness, loss of consciousness, numbness, palpitations, paralysis, trouble walking, psychiatric disturbances like delusions, hallucinations, paranoia or depression, and death.

The agency warns that individuals regularly using nitrous oxide can experience long-term neurological effects, including spinal cord and brain damage, even after they stop using the gas.

Reports of injuries connected to people inhaling nitrous oxide gas have increased in recent years, according to the agency. However, the FDA did not indicate how many reports of injuries it has received.

Nitrous oxide gas is sold under brand names like Baking Bad, Cosmic Gas, Galaxy Gas, HOTWHIP, InfusionMax, MassGass, Miami Magic and Whip-it!

The products are sold online and at retailers including Amazon.com, eBay, Walmart, smoke/vape shops and gas stations.

The agency warned consumers to contact a doctor if they recently used nitrous oxide gas products or are experiencing any symptoms. Side effects should also be reported to the FDA’s Human Foods safety reporting program.
