Just For Men Lawsuits

MANUFACTURER: Combe Inc.

OVERVIEW: “Just For Men” hair coloring was originally released in 1987, and is advertised as a hair, beard and mustache dye specifically to cover up gray hair for men.

There are a host of products in the line, from beard and mustache coloring kits to hair and side burns and even some that are designed to add a touch of gray to hair.

Over the past few years, concerns have emerged about the growing number of reports involving severe chemical burns and other allergic reactions among “Just for Men” users.

The side effects of Just For Men may include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Burning of the skin
  • Swelling of the skin
  • Severe itching
  • Blisters and weeping sores
  • Trouble breathing due to throat swelling

“JUST FOR MEN” ALLERGIC REACTIONS: Hundreds of reports have been submitted by men who had used the product for years but suddenly suffered severe chemical burns and swelling of the face. In many cases, the “Just for Men” problems emerge long after the dye was first used.

While some have speculated that the company may have changed the formulation of Just For Men, Combe officials have publicly denied that. Sudden allergic reactions among men may also be linked to changes in body chemistry among users.

“Just For Men” dye contains p-Phenylenediamine, an organic compound that is considered one of the most prevalent allergens in the world.

In May 2009, the medical journal Dermatitis listed it as the tenth most prevalent allergen in patch tests, and it was declared Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in 2006.

I have been using the dark brown beard dye for the past 5 years, the last two times I have used it I have come out in oozing sores on my face. My beard is also extremely itchie. I am convinced a recent formula change is the cause of this, especially taking into consideration all of the recent comments. Just hope I’m not permanently scarred or else it is a permanent beard for me.

I’ve been using Just For Men over the last few months and here lately I’ve been having really extreme itching sensations under my beard and very badly irritated skin after shaving the beard. I’ve cut out all other products and lotions that I’ve used on my face and have narrowed it down to the Just For Men beard dye product

Joshua
Just started using this product. First week was fine, used it again yesterday immediately got a burning sensation. Tried to rinse it out but it burns so bad now and it looks like chemical burns on my face and it’s painful to swallow anything. I will never use this product again!

i been using JFM mustache and beard for couple of months and I notice recently after I apply the product i felt burning on my skin.I jump to the shower to rinse it off and after couple of hours a red spot appear under my mustache and it swell and a liquid coming out of the sores.I immediately stop using this product and now I try to nurse the sores, the swollen redness and the scabs on my face.I will never use this product again.

I have been taking JFM for about 5 to 6 years. The last couple time I notice that after applying this product I kept breaking out with rashes and severe itching which would not stop. Constantly scratching my beard to the point where it would start to bleed. this went on for days. So finally my last application is when I realized that It was.from this product. I had the itching and rashes and even swells to the point where I had to scratch I finally realized it was just for men product that was causing this. Something must have been changed in this product this never happened before. they need to do something about this. perhaps even pull this product from the market, I’m sure they must know this is a issue with this formula and still alone people to use it.

I have used JFM for my beard on and off for a few years. I only let it set 3 to 5 minutes and then rinse off. And I only use it once every few months or so, at the most. Always been totally fine. I recently got a new box, Medium Brown, but it was Much much lighter than the prior medium brown I used. It was definitely very light brown, and I couldn’t understand why they changed the color so much. Anyway, I left it on a couple minutes longer than normal. I didn’t notice til a day or two later that my skin underneath seemed to be discolored along the places where I applied it. I didn’t think anything of it and figured it was just a little stained and would dissipate. Just a bit ago, a couple days later, my beard was itching a little, and I started scratching at it as I was laying on my bed watching TV. I noticed some flaking, and kept picking at it, thinking maybe just a little dry skin/dandruff. Then as I was scratching at it a little, it started feeling wet and I was easily pulling out hairs. Every light scratch at my beard was wet and it started to feeel more like burns than an itch. I suddenly jumped up, realizing something definitely is not right….Is this blood ??? I ran to the mirror and to my horror I could see my chin was all red and looked burned and bleeding/weeping, and patches of my hair were gone. The skin that used to look just a little discolored was now red and burned/bleeding. I immediately realized that it had to be related to the JFM. I jumped on my computer to Google what remedy there might be for a reaction to JFM, and was horrified to find all these stories!!! I am definitely another victim, and am now freaking out about whether this will heal, whether I have permanently scarred my face, and whether I have lost my gotee that I have worn for over 35 years!!!!!!! It is my look, and I would be devastated if I’ve now lost it overnight!!! I am shocked that this could be allowed to be on the shelf with such a risk of this bad what is apparently this common of a reaction to the FACE!!!!!

I put Just for men on my face and felt burning, I immediately washed it off. I had what looked like welts on my face. The next morning when I woke up my face and chin were swollen, my face now has open weeping sores and still swollen. I can’t sleep from the weeping sores and pain, I have to keep cleaning and trying to keep my face dry from the open weeping sores. Its been 5 days and I don’t see any progress. I’m scared that this won’t heal. Is there any relief in sight?

Nathan
My burns are now the size of a quarter. I constantly have to blot my skin with a napkin in order to keep the ooze at bay.

Nathan
Small bumps turned into open sores that weep and won’t heal. I’ve tried almost every topical cream with no relief. It burns and itches like crazy. I have to see a Dr now. They just get larger and I’m worried about permanent damage.

Bill
Have used this product for years , just applied day before yesterday and felt burning before the five minutes and and washed off at four and a half minutes and I use liight to med brown my beard was black and very itchey have irritation on sides of face and beard and moustach areas still itching and tried using anti itch meds and burned like crazy . This is first time Ive had reacation like this .

Jerry
There has definitely been some type of change. I’ve used Just for Men beard coloring for about 15 years and had been happy with the product. I have recently suffered the chemical burns immediately after applying the product. It appears to be the same as what others are describing. It results in blistering that goes on for several days and I’ve had to apply Neosporin ointment to try to heal. After 15 years I cannot use this product anymore. I do not believe that I suddenly developed an allergy as is suggested.

David
I had the same problem as many of the others that posted here. Have used the product for years with no problems, all of a sudden, since the last time I used it, my scalp at the temples began itching a great deal, had an open weeping sore and swelling. Not sure what’s going on here, but will never use the stuff again.

Used JFM year before last when I decided to attemp to grow a beard. After about 2 months decided to shave. 4 months ago I decided to attemp again. Used the box I had, and color was weak. Got a new box 2 months ago and begin to notice some itching and burning the afternoon after using that morning. Sores came up on my chin that were weeping and would scab over. Itching made me rub and tear scabs off to weep again. 4 days ago I used it again, but this time used a comb to pull hair out and apply dye with comb holding hair. Waited 4-5 minutes and jumped into shower to wash off. Used shampoo to soap hair and my beard. Rubbed my beard while rince my hair and face. About 2 hours noticed itching and burning on my chin. (My facial hair is on my chin and mustache, not on sides of face). This itching and burning has been for the last 4 days. Scabs have formed on chin and itching. Perhaps the formula has changed? My daughter is a hairdresser and has used chemicals to dye my facial hair 2-4 years ago before closing her shop. Never had problems with her chemicals. During my career as a Funeral Service Professional, I was exposed to many different harsh chemicals and have never had these kinds of reactions.

Paul
I used just for men. For beard. Goatee take gray out I had goatee looking best finally grew out like I wanted it I’m in my fifties wanted hide grey used just for men burned my skin under bottom lip and itched and caused bumps seeping sores. And also hair loss now my goatee won’t grow in middle full it looks terrible with lumps and sores I had to shave it it looked gapped so bad my goatee was my favorite feature now after years. Of keeping neat trimmed goatee or beard I can’t grow it full any more So I shaved it completely

About 5 years ago my husband used this product for the first time. Within 2 minutes he started yelling for me to rinse it off. Within hours he had huge blisters on his scalp that later turned into scabs. He was in his late 70s and did not leave the house for weeks as he was so ashambed at his appearance, He has since past away, but this product is dangerous and should be pulled off the market.

Mark
I used JFM for many years….I had to stop using it because my scalp would itch constantly. Even weeks after applying it. The itching finally became too much. It seemed to be getting worse after each use. I also had/have bumps (pimples) and scabs on my scalp. I was just diagnosed with Acne rosacea and rhinophyma nose April 3, 2018. This condition has been a constant source of embarrassment. I currently have a large lump on the back of my head. I stopped using JFM in 2017. My hair is really fine (thin) so I used to divide the bottle into thirds…..this was enough to cover my entire head. This was also applied to my eyebrows every time.

Robert
Used JDM beard coloring for years, recently suffered severe burns and blistering. Swelling and inflammation

Ron
I used JFM on my beard the same way as I have many times previously- immediately felt burning sensation followed by blistering, open sores and weeping of a clear-yellowish liquid, stomach pain and swelling of entire face restricting my vision and labored breathing from swelling of neck. An ambulance and local police were called and I was whisked off to the local ER with lights flashing, sirens blasting. I had tubes coming out of both arms and was administered IV’s This was the scariest episode in my entire life and feel Just for Men should be held financially responsible.

I’ve been using this product for 10 plus years with no problem. Recently did vebused the product and it caused a severe allergic reaction to my upper lip. It is swollen and painful. I had to make several trips to the doctor and pay out of pocket expenses for medications.

I previously have used JFM for years, and never had any problem with the product. I followed the instructions on the box, and I never had any allergic reaction after days of waiting (until recently). I stopped wearing a full beard a year or so ago, but a few months ago I decided to regrow one. So, I purchased a new box of JFM and followed instructions again on the box. No issues the day I used it. Initially, the first time I used it, everything was great and I was satisfied with the color. Until the next morning when I noticed my lips were tingling as if they had fallen asleep (like when your foot falls asleep after sitting on it too long). I didn’t connect the two for whatever reason because my lips never touched the product (I thought perhaps it was something I ate). So a few nights ago, I used the product again and the same thing happened (strong tingling/numbness around my lips). This time, about 24 hrs later, I noticed a strong/unbearable itching on my facial area that just wouldn’t stop. Another 24 hrs later, I looked closely and a blister appeared on my chin followed by a second blister above it. The bottom one began bleeding, and the top one began oozing a clear/yellow puss (continuously). The few drops of blood have stopped, however, the puss continues to flow, the numbness/tingling of my lips continues, and today I noticed a similar looking blister on the edge of my nose where the product never even came close. My chin looks disgusting, with red and yellow scabs, and I am afraid it may be permanently scarred. The tingling around my lips feels like it is getting worse. My friends noticed and commented that it looked disgusting, and if I were to kiss anyone, I would literally dab puss on their face if they touched my beard. I will never ever use this product again in its current formulation and I believe strongly that this product is hazardous even when used religiously like the box instructions say.

I recently used Just For Men on a 4 day beard for a party and tgat night the itching became unbearable… Shaved and applied vitamin E but three days later still red and itching like crazy… Used Just for Men 6 years ago with no problems… The must have changed something.. I hope this isn’t going to be a long term issue… Never using that stuff again!

Kirk
I used it before with no issue’s waited a few years before using again, that’s when I started having issue’s. It burned my beard and mustache area of my face I thought I left it on to long or something at first but after thinking further, I hadn’t. Went to the hospital for all the burning, swelling, and itching that occurred. I was treated and went home hurt and embarrassed. 1 year later against my better judgement I used it again!! With the same results!! The doc told me this time stay away from this stuff so now I just go grey. I submitted my story and pictures and hospital records to this law suit in 2016, it is now 2018, and I haven’t heard anything from anybody?? Where there payments awarded cause if so I think I’m due, I don’t care what it is I deserve it because I suffered from this product TWICE!!!! Can anyone help with this please and thanks. The forgotten

Mark
The Just for Men beard dye product should be removed from shelves NOW. I did the elbow test with no adverse affects yet my face swelled and reddened with severe itching after two days of using their product. Consumers should avoid using at all costs.

Trevor
So strange! The product worked great for years, but something changed. Now it causes burning, itching, wounds. And…the color doesn’t last as long as it used to!

Dan
The pain is excruciating. My face is red and puffy. I have taken Reactin, lots of it. It hasn’t helped. It is a chemical burn, not allergies. The only thing that has helped is an sun burn medication. It has Aloe and tea tree oil in it by Natural Tone. It helped bring down the red and some of the pain. Best of luck if you have this, it is awful and JFM hasn’t done anything to help this situation.

Mel
I’ve been using Just for Men H-35 for about 7 years. In the past 4-5 months I’ve developed a severely itching scalp, which upon close examination is scaly. Last night, I awoke to find my pillow soaked in blood – apparently I had vigorously scratched the nape of my neck. I have begun using an hydrocortisone solution sold at Walgreen’s for scalp issues – hopefully that will help. In the meantime I will consult a dermatologist next week. And a class action attorney next.

Dewayne
Never use this product, its very harmful and could put you in much pain.i will never use thi product again

I have been using JFM for 10 or more years ,my scrape has been burned three or more times. My hair has gotten thinner, falling out and itching from top to sides.

Joshua
Well I really wish I had known about all this stuff on the internet. I never thought to look since I’ve used JFM at least 5 times in the past. I used it a few days ago on my beard and mustache, just about 1/4 of the tubes because I don’t like the solid dyed look it gives with a full application. Never had any problems in the past years using it and all of a sudden my face is bright red, swollen, burning and probably the worst itch ive ever had. To top it off I had an interview for a job and couldn’t even go because of how my face looks and the blistering wet spots. This is ridiculous that there is so much about how the product is causing this only recently and the company is not doing anything and still able to sell this. Definitely needs to be a lawsuit for all the people that have been wronged by this company.

Hector
I have used JFM for almost two weeks, and between these days I have only applied JFM 3 times. Now, I started noticing redness and itchy bumps on my chin. Last, night after applying JFM, I had the worse itchy issue of my life! I woke up in the middle of the night and I noticed blisters and my skin was extremenly irritated. I’m worry and I dont know what to do…I have taken pictures to keep proof of what I’m posting here. I honestly wish I have never used Just For Men after this horrible experience. I know Im not alone in this and I wish the JFM makers will do something about it.

John
I have been using JFM for years now and have notice sores on my head. I did not know that it was being caused by this product, (JFM) that I was using at the time. I also had spots of hair coming off my head, so it has to be from this product. I am sorry that I will not be using JFM any more for those reasons. I hope that the company will come up with a new product with out the chemicals that are damaging.

prentice
I used just for men jet black off and on for years no problem but last year used it face blisters, burns and bleeding Doctor told me eczema had to take shot and cream then used it a few weeks after samething so i knew it’s the dye I have a lawyer but it’s been about a year now and nothing

Justin
Similar story, used this product when I had a beard a couple of years back without issue. I’ve recently grown a beard again, a bit greyer than last, so bought some JFM . done the patch test on my arm, no problem so two days later followed the instructions and applied to my beard. The first couple of days were fine but then after washing my hair and beard the symptoms started, blistering under my beard which then started weeping, dripping on my clothes, swelling of the chin (currently look like I have the neck of a turkey) and burning sensation like you can’t imagine! Two days in and a trip to the doctors for cream and antibiotics and its still constantly weeping. Having now reviewed the amount of complaints about this product and experienced the results I can’t understand how its still being sold. The company selling this stuff should be made to experience it themselves so they realise the pain they are inflicting on people. If the company can’t be stopped then retailers should take a stand and remove it from their shelves!

I used this product for two years and started developing a large BALD spots and patches on upper right side of my throat as well as my chin area and left side of it as well. All my hair is gone on those areas of my skin. The product seems to have attacked my hairs ans kin in the long run..Beware Just for men beard dye.

Rafael
I am going through the same terrible moment of a bad reaction to just for men product..I went to the ER about 2 weeks ago also with the scalp itching really bad the Dr.thought it was shingles and I believed him so took meds for that…and missed 3 days of work..but it’s the allergic reaction to the product..this I found out after using it again 2 weeks later..blisters and weeping skin on my scalp.my lip is very red and swollen..some product got on my ear and it also burned…I will never again use any type of product to do this..I am now 4 days with this pain and cannot wait for it to go away..

Phillip
I used it for years. Then I had all the same reactions mentioned in the comments. Burning, weeping blisters, bad swelling etc. Tried it 2 years later and had the same reaction. It hurt and it was gross!! Sometimes I feel the same sensation but not the skin reactions. Just the burning/ stinging after a shower and shave.

Ted
I’ve used JFM Mustache & Beard every week or two for at least a decade with no side effects and have been very happy with it. A few weeks ago my short beard began to itch, not badly but just enough to be continuously mildly annoying. It took awhile for me to make the possible association between the itching and JFM when I noticed that the itching tended to become less severe the farther I got from my last application and worse right after an application. Searching the internet I’ve found references to other’s who’ve had no problems till recently. Even though the manufacturer claims that the formula has not changed, my experience suggests that it perhaps recently has. For convenience I typically buy several boxes at once which last up to 6 months for me as I use just a little each application. The supply I bought last winter recently ran out so I purchased another supply. My itching problem has suspiciously coincided with me starting to use the new supply a few weeks ago. I plan to stop using JFM to prove conclusively that it is the cause of my itching.

This product almost killed me….It closed the passage way in my throat, Interfered with my sexlife..by me being African desent the chemicals are 40 times more dangerous to us..It Lowers our sex drive which caused problems between me and wife…

Paul
Used Just for Men dark brown and black for years since the mid 90’s then i took 3 year break and in 2012 got some Just For Men expecting no problems especially considering my history with the product. I used it and the next two weeks of my life were brutal torture. I woke up the net day with seeping boils on my scalp. The itch was absolutely unbelievable. I had chicken pox when i was 35 and this was like chicken pox on steroids. For the next week and a half the boils on my scalp oozed and matted my hair with a disgusting yellowish crust. Sleep was an endless tossing and turning just trying to ignore the itch and find a position of some comfort. I thought it would NEVER end man. Work was impossible. 12 days of torture. Finally the insidious chemical invasion of my system subsided. I would like some explanation as well as compensation

Lost my job because having dizzy spells breathing problems and imberest to be in public just for men ruined my life

Will
Used this product for 8 months with no problems and was satisfied until I experienced the severe itching, welts, and hives over my entire body a day after applying to my beard..After reading other comments I consider myself lucky as I didn’t have the oozing bumps and swelling but I still ended up at the Dr and was prescribed antibiotics and a steroid cream. A month later and I still haven’t fully recovered from this product.

Gary
Ruined my LIFE embarrassed to be in public

Eric
Just started using this product as box instructed. At the moement I dont forsee any physical scaring but there was a definiate reaction to my skin as it was painful and had red blotches in the treated areas. Also my lips are dry and have numbness. It’s 5 days later and visable symptoms have subsided, however skin is still senstitive, itchy, and at times painful burning sensations kick in.

Robert
