Just For Men Lawsuits

MANUFACTURER: Combe Inc.

OVERVIEW: “Just For Men” hair coloring was originally released in 1987, and is advertised as a hair, beard and mustache dye specifically to cover up gray hair for men.

There are a host of products in the line, from beard and mustache coloring kits to hair and side burns and even some that are designed to add a touch of gray to hair.

Over the past few years, concerns have emerged about the growing number of reports involving severe chemical burns and other allergic reactions among “Just for Men” users.

The side effects of Just For Men may include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Burning of the skin
  • Swelling of the skin
  • Severe itching
  • Blisters and weeping sores
  • Trouble breathing due to throat swelling

“JUST FOR MEN” ALLERGIC REACTIONS: Hundreds of reports have been submitted by men who had used the product for years but suddenly suffered severe chemical burns and swelling of the face. In many cases, the “Just for Men” problems emerge long after the dye was first used.

While some have speculated that the company may have changed the formulation of Just For Men, Combe officials have publicly denied that. Sudden allergic reactions among men may also be linked to changes in body chemistry among users.

“Just For Men” dye contains p-Phenylenediamine, an organic compound that is considered one of the most prevalent allergens in the world.

In May 2009, the medical journal Dermatitis listed it as the tenth most prevalent allergen in patch tests, and it was declared Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in 2006.

I recently started using jfm a few months ago. At first I noticed some itching after use from time to time but just recently it’s been getting worse. I’m getting lesions where the dye was never applied and now recently I’m experiencing weeping sores under my beard. The itching is now nonstop. So bad that I’m constantly scratching at my face even in my sleep.

I have used JFM Beard and Moustache as well as hair dye..for about a 9 month with no issue. Day before last I put on the total grey formula and experienced some tingling.. not a big deal as this is normal. It wasnt until the nearing the 5 minutes that it got worse.. I showered and used shampoo as normal.. not itching.. no pain.. it wasnt until I woke up at night.. with swelling and itching.. I parted my beard to discover top layer of flesh..peeling. I immediately shaved..to reveal severe chemical burns…and really bad on my chin.. face swelling..rinsed in water and mild soap.. to remove any residual..then applied Aloe..worst burn in my life.. and still in pain.and swelling.. I am finished with JFM..

I have naturally jet black hair so stupid greys are starkly visible. When I first discovered Just For Men Moustache & Beard, I meticulously followed each and every instruction included in the box – including the 48-hour patch test. I even repeated it on my other arm and neither test provoked any discernable immune reaction – no pain, no redness, no itching, no weeping sores, no inflammatory symptoms of any kind. This led me to believe that JFM Moustache & Beard dye was safe to use. For the two-and-a-half years of using this product once a week I was highly impressed with the results: my beard looked so neat and uniform and all the gross grey was eliminated. And what really surprised me was that other people were actually complimenting me on my beard!! A mate of mine even shaved his beard off because he felt that his wouldn’t ever look as good as mine!! But then one day a few months ago when I’d used JFM exactly as I always have I instantly began experiencing a bizarre tingling feeling on my face. An hour later my face was severely itchy and I could see several dark red/purple lesions under my beard as well as along the entire upper border of where my beard begins. The discomfort of such severe itching was extreme. To my shock, a few days later I broke out in several small pustules mostly on my scalp (which is weird because I never applied JFM to my scalp – I only used it on my beard.) Then a large welt developed on one side of my face just below my left sideburn. It was warm to the touch and began weeping clear, colourless fluid (interstitial fluid). Very high dose diphenhydramine (Benadryl) was not enough to stop the severe itching and neither topical hydrocortisone nor fluocinonide (a different topical steroid) were able to stop the dark red/purple lesions from forming. What motive could JFM possibly have in using stupid p-phenylenediamine in its dye formula when it clearly confers no benefit?!?! None of the hairdye used in professional hair salons contains this horrible compound. I had been such a loyal customer for so long but now I refuse to buy JFM because the dramatic immune response it provokes is just too debilitating=(

Used Just For Men Black beard dye after doing their elbow test with no adverse reactions. The next morning work to open seeping sores under my beard on my chin and neck and acute burning sensations in those areas. Pus was all over my pillow and my lymph nodes had swollen up and I had a terrible headache. Applied cortisone cream but the sores continue to ooze and face continues to itch. Scared to shave incase scarred for life. Anyways this company should be held accountable as this product is very dangerous

I have used Just For Men ever since 1989 .Approximately 2 years ago, I had a bad reaction and I noticed skin burns, swelling, red blotches which looked like chemical burns. The head sores, and constant itching scalp drew a concern thinking something was wrong with my immune system .I discontinued using Just For Men last year as I couldn’t stand the pain and ugly sores when I used the product. A friend of mine said he had the same problem I experienced with the use of Just For Men , then I knew it wasn’t just me that was experiencing this. I am very upset that the company knew the hazards but still used the chemical for their dye. They need to reformulate the product without the hazardous chemicals and put a safe product on the market .

Been using JFM for years, but I had a bad reaction with JFM 3 weeks again. Intense burning, itchy skin and skin lesions, weeping sores etc. It was nightmare. I am still itching a little but the scars and dry lips remain.

I was totally in the dark as to why my head had “cigarette burns” type lesions. They’d itch, and when I scratched, pieces of flesh came off, then a sort of “puss” and blood. Then scabs formed, so I tried anti itch and neosporin but it just helped a bit. I still have a dozen or so scabs and think the hair may not regrow ( I’m 55 ). It really had me puzzled, I have used the product for years for greying, both head ( sides got real grey ) and face ( I quit cause the grey was winning, so I let it alone ) I’ve been wearing a hat to cover up, and keeping it a secret cause I didn’t know what was going on…now I do… and I AM PISSED OFF !!I contacted a local atty who knew nothing, so if this is something you excel at I’ll take pics and listen to you consult, then choose the atty that seems most helpful.

I completed the 48 hours allergic test according to the instructions and passed with no issues and still got skin burn, swelling, swollen chin, bumped up skin as well. This was a pretty bad allergic reaction. I have uses the product sometime ago with no issues. However still wanted to check for any reactions before applying beard dye since been a while since last use. This product is not safe and consistent. just For Men should be held liable.

Nolan

I have used JFM off and on for about 10 years. I last used it about 18 months ago. I have never had any reaction to it in all that time. I used it yesterday to get rid of gray on my goatee and mustache. I left it on about 5 minutes (as I have in the past) and now have very itchy skin where I applied it. I aslo have weeping sores in those areas. I don’t know what they did to the formula but this product is off my list of stuff to use. I will stick with gray hair instead.

arthur
