Mazda Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Engine Defect

Mazda faces a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of vehicle owners, alleging that the automaker intentionally concealed information about an engine valve defect and has refused to repair the problem.

The complaint (PDF) was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey on August 21, seeking class action status to represent all owners of Mazda vehicles that used engines equipped with a variable valve timing (VVT) assembly.

According to allegations raised in the Mazda class action lawsuit, the variable valve timing assembly has a “propensity to fail prematurely,” which may cause the engine’s timing chain to loosen or detach, leading to partial or total engine failure.

“Although this defect is covered under Mazda’s powertrain warranty, Mazda fails to repair the defect under warranty,” the complaint indicates. “Mazda has had actual knowledge about the VVT assembly defect since at least 2007. Unfortunately, as part of the purchase process, Mazda has concealed material facts regarding the defect from purchasers and lessors of vehicles equipped with a defective VVT assembly.”

The lawsuit claims that Mazda’s standard response to complaints about the VVT defect is to maintain that the vehicle owners failed to provide sufficient proof of engine oil changes. The automaker’s standards are subjective and designed to make sure it does not have to acknowledge or repair the defect under warranty, according to allegations raised in the class action.

Vehicles that allegedly have the defective variable valve timing (VVT) assembly include the Maza CX-7, Mazdaspeed 3, Mazda 6 (2.3L) Mazda3, Mazda5 and MX-5. None of the defective engines have been in production since 2010, according to the complaint.

Mazda allegedly attempted to cover up the engine defects to uphold its claim that its vehicles will be “free from defects,” a statement made in its warranties, the lawsuit maintains. However, class action indicates that the company has known about the problem since November 2007, when it issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to dealers stating:

When the engine is started, some vehicles may exhibit a loud ticking noise from the variable valve timing actuator at first start for a couple of seconds. This is caused by the lock pin of the variable valve timing
actuator not fully engaging. Heat treatment has now been added around the hole of the variable valve timing rotor lock pin to prevent this from happening.

The lawsuit says that the company determined that the variable valve timing assembly problems were caused by inadequate or improper hardening of the components when they were first manufactured and attempted several times to fix the problem.

The company has also received a number of consumer complaints about variable valve timing assembly failure leading to catastrophic engine failures, according to the complaint.

In January 2012, the company launched a “Special Services Program” for owners of vehicles affected by the problem, saying it would extend the warranty coverage specifically to repair the VVT on vehicles equipped with its L3T engine. it extended the warranty one year or 10,000 miles. However, the lawsuit claims that Mazda referred to the problem as a noise concern and did not advise consumers that it could lead to catastrophic engine failure, and excluded a number of vehicles with the defective VVT from the program.

The class action lawsuit for Mazda vehicle owners indicates presents claims for fraudulent concealment, breach of warranty, and violating consumer protection laws.

My Mazda CX7 was taken to garage for oil leak and low oil. Replaced valve cover gasket and car started making noise ” Mechanic took it to Mazda and they said “this happens with these cars…” Past warranty – 173k – and no redress from anyone. Mazda tech found it to have “VVT actuator noise, zero oil pressure, and turbo leaking, worn and failing internally…needs new engine.”

My 2006 Speed6 blew the motor with 53,000 miles on it ….. how do I join this class action suit??????

Bought a brand new Mazda cx7 turbo in 2007. AC broke down got repair about $800, arm joints bad got repair $1000, noise Dealership is saying that my Timing chain is not good but looks like my engine is not good too now…bad car.

How do I get my mother’s Mazda added to this class action? She has a 2008 Mazda CX-7 and the engine is dead. They told her the exact excuse of not providing ample proof of oil changes. How should we go about getting them to replace the engine, or compensate her for this scam?

Natasha
I bought a 2010 Mazda 5 in 2016 and I only got to drive it for 5 months before the engine stopped working it has a loud rattling noise so it does run but I don’t drive it because of the rattle noise! I called Mazda in 2016 and asked them to replace my engine because at the time it had 143k miles under 150k and they refused to replace it never told me anything about a extra year warranty or anything and so now it’s been sitting almost a year and is now in non drivable. It’s still has under 150k miles but sill can’t get it repaired! So I had to buy a new car and am trying to sale it for $2000 to get some of my money I waisted on a car to drive for only 6 months.

Mazda Cx-7 2008 caught fire in the engine a month ago today dealership tells me because of the turbo I have to replace the entire engine which is 5500 dollars used with a 110,000 miles on it and 10000 for a new engine. In addition to this the timing chain had to be replaced which should have been a recall considering it was making that noise from the moment I bought it, but was told it was nothing. I am beyond furious about the fact Mazda states these are not recalls there were several recalls in this particular car.

Barbara
All of these need to be submitted to https://www.safercar.gov/ because Mazda is insisting there isn’t a problem. I, too, had catastrophic engine failure with about 10 minutes of warning from the engine light going on to complete failure as I posted in the comment above. The only way they are going to be forced into fixing this issue is if they are forced to recall, and the only way to do that is to submit it to safercar.gov

I purchased a 2008 Mazda3 used in the fall of 2015. When I purchased it, it had around 60,000 miles on it. I don’t drive a great deal, so it now only has 85,000 on it 2.5 years later. My oil changes are done regularly and I pay attention to any lights and sensors that seem off. I had driven my car earlier in the day, no lights, no sounds, no indication that anything was wrong at all. I got back in a few hours later and was doing some highway driving. The check engine light went on as I got onto the highway. Not even 15 minutes later, as I started to climb a hill I noticed it was losing power and began pulling over. Between the time that I noticed I was losing power and the time I fully stopped and the car died could not have been more than 3 minutes. When the car died it began billowing smoke out the exhaust pipe and out from under the hood. The oil was checked and was at a normal level though the dipstick itself was almost too hot to touch. I didn’t attempt to restart the car at any point but had myself pushed to a safe location. Had it towed to my shop and they said that oil levels looked normal, that there was coolant in the system. They said they can’t even figure out exactly what was wrong or what had happened but that the engine was completely shot. I now have the option of purchasing a used engine with about the same number of miles my car had it when I purchased it (so 2.5 years of light driving) for $4100 installed or a new one from Mazda and only a single year warranty at the cost of $5000 installed, nearly the entire KBB value of the car. I am disgusted that there have been so many people before me with this issue, no warning signs, nothing, who have taken it to Mazda, and who have gotten absolutely no response. I really can’t fathom how this isn’t ever been recalled as it is abundantly clear that there is a significant defect that is affecting all of your cars with this engine. Disgraceful.

Chris
2007 mazda cx 7 my fiance was driving the car and a check engine light came on so i had it read and said missfire in #3 so i changed all plugs. A week or so went by and the light came back on. Same thing. So i bought a coil pack and put it in. A few days later she had an issue with it running horribly. Checked it out still had the same miss fire code. Took it to my michanic and he said that the valves needed replaced along with the injecters. He did more research and discovered that the vvt was bad as well. Called the mazda dealer they said they could fix it for a minimum of 2500. Thats without looking at it. Called mazda and asked about thos lawsuit and the woman didnt know her head from her butt on what to say about it so she said that she cant find an answer for me. I asked to be transfered to someone who could have an answer and she flat out refused to help me in any way with it. Im pissed because there is a lawsuit and they act like its no big deal. People will sell them and they wont have to fix the issue.

2007 Mazda cx7 and my AC compressor just burnt up. I called and they said the recall was only until 2012. That’s BS if the previous owner didn’t get it fixed then it should still be replaced!!

Travis
Have a 2007 Mazda 6 which we bought from the dealer in ’09 with about 13,000 miles on it. Have always maintained it well. It now has about 90,000 miles and started making the ticking sound when cranking. Have been told its related to the timing components. Parts must be purchased individually since I can’t find a kit. Parts and labor will probably run about $1500, probably more.

Jerry
Same CX-7 here 2008 model. I have owned many cars and drive a lot. I must say this is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. I feel fortunate that I have only had to replace the AC compressor twice in the 4 years I have owned it. It does have the mentioned “ticking” noise going on. I am debating on replacing timing chain myself or just trade it in. I know one thing that is for certain, I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER MAZDA!!!!!!!!! I owned a 2006 Suzuki Forenza that was a much better purchase than this piece of crap. Forenza had 215,000 miles on it and I would still be driving it had a deer not jumped out in front of me. Enough ranting Mazda just needs to do the right thing and fix the problem or compensate owners. That would go a long way towards keeping customers.

Larry
I bought a used Mazda 6 2005, ad oil change when I bought it started to make a slight ticking noise spent 3000 out of retirement and the day I registered it cost me another 300, then pulled out of dmv and heard what sounded like a lifter coming thru my engine and new tires 400 was told good running cars vroom vroom now reading all this stuff my mechanic says lost a bearing need a motor should I replace and just hope doesn’t happen again??

Michele
I purchased Mazda CX-7 2010 and have had nothing but issues with the vehicle, turbo charger, timing chain, VVC etc and now guess what they tell me I need a new engine at 93,000 miles and I have been taking it to them for oil changes since they are free and they tell me they have no records of oil changes in 2012, how did that happen? So apparently I neglected the vehicle, not! I caused the engine to fail? Mazda please have some integrity you knew about these issues with the engine from 2007-2010 so please take care of your customers. 9000.00 for new engine, really?

Tammi
I have an ’07 Mazda CX7 and it has been nothing but a pain in my ass! I had the timing chain replaced at 74k miles (in 2013) which was 4k miles too many for the recall so I paid like $1300 and that was AFTER a discount! I had to have the turbo replaced $2300, the AC replaced $800 and I have had my engine coils replaced 4 times!!!! Luckily, it’s been under warranty but still, 4 times???? The car only has 128k miles on it. These cars should last well beyond that. Does anyone know how I get in on this lawsuit?

Audrey
Bought my mazda in 2007, was fine first year or two. Took it to dealership to get a recall repaired and i told them about the knocking under the hood, how my engine light stays on, my oil smells like its burning every time i change it or add more. They told me everything was fine they looked at engine hooked up to machine it was fine. Few months past sound got louder, car starting eating up my gas and then my car would give me issues starting. Took it back warrenty was up they told me it was nothing. Didnt realize what was wrong with it until i started googling issues and came across thousand of other unhappy cx7 mazda owners with the same issues. Never buying a mazda again. Think mazda should pay for the issues. I spent my hard earned money on this car thinking it would be realiable and safe for my family now i am looking into a new to me used vehicle that doesnt have this issues or mazda and dealerships dont lie about defects

Lakisha
I own a 2007 mazda cx7 and was driving at 45 mph when the car cut off and would not start. Was told by mechanic shop that timing chain broke and tore the engine up. I was quoted at a price of 5000 for a new engine. Mazda should be ashamed and forced to fix the problem. No more mazdas for me, I will stick to the faithful Buick which I have been the proud owner for over 10 years with no problems.

Janine
Mazda RX8, 2005 At 47,000 in the spring of 2012, my car presented a mis-firing issue with the engine. Bountiful Mazda did the labor to replace the engine at that time. I was told the new engine was guaranteed for 100,000 miles, just like the factory engine that failed. Believing that, I chose to keep the car. Now, just 35,000 later, the engine has failed again. No fault of my own. Mazda insists they promised 96 months/100,000, from the original purchase date of the car. This makes no sense to me. The new engine should be guaranteed from the date of replacement. The car has only 82,000 miles on it, and the engine they replaced is failing again. Had this been explained to me, I never would have kept this car. To add insult to injury, I was asked to approach Mazda corporate myself, and when the representative dealt me the news that Mazda was not going to do anything, she ended the call by saying, “Have a nice day.” Un believable.

I purchase my madza cx7 that I paid cash for. So I got it from a used dealership. So I brought the car to a dealership because of the lower arm control have a recall. So they fixed it.The tech found other things wrong and one was the vvt timing. So I called the manufactor. So they told me that they sent the recall letter about the vvt to the owner before me and they are sorry. But the recall is over. And they will not fix it. I promise you, I will not ever purchase another mazda. It’s not my fault that they sent it (letter) to the wrong person. I can see that it’s not right. They are wrong.

Charles
I have a 2008 Mazda 6 s. I also have the same ticking and just recently my car stalls when warm and will not restart till some time later as well as minor smoke from engine bay only 106k miles on this car. I maintain this car fairly well

Luis
I bought a 2008 mazda cx7 from my cousin 5mths ago and it had the same ticking noise and this past weekend my engine block cracked with 72k miles on it. The car has been serviced every 3000 miles

Kermit
I bought a 2008 mazda CX7 on june 2016 after driving it for almost 6months the variable valve broke down .my mechanic told me i need a new engine. So i called the dealership but unfortunately they refused to help me. I was so pissed cos my source of income is doing UBER, now i don’t have a car to use and still owe 13k .mazda should reimburse our money . MAZDA IF YOUR READ MY COMMENT PLEASE STOP SCAMMING PEOPLE AND MAKING SHITTY CARS!! I have family to feed and i need a car to start making money MAZDA! Right now im in depth because of what happened to my car. Every time i called the dealership they always put me on hold which pissed me off! Really after taking my money and giving me a shitty car? I HOPE KARMA GETS YOU MAZDA!!!!!

Steven
I bought my daughter a 2012 Mazda 6 for her 16th birthday, it has 85k miles on it, she was supposed to take her driving test in it on Monday, we went to go to the store tonight and were driving at 30 mph 2 blocks from him home and it just went clack clack clack and pieces of the block and oil were everywhere, My wife and I are both disabled and on a fixed income, it took us over 3 years to save the money to by her that car? What the heck am I supposed to do now? Save for two years to buy a used motor for it? It is a terrible thing when manufacturers do this to people, I put in 40 years of hard work before my heart failure, never screwed anyone over in my life, I anyone at Mazda reads this, come on by my place, I want shove this car somewhere so you can take it to work for some show and tell! I hope Karma gets everyone of you who knows about these engine problems, and I feel bad for everyone going through this, I should have bought my daughter a Chevy truck like mine, dammit!

Brett
I two am experiencing a ticking noise in the top of my engine only after it gets warm and the noise gets worse after excellration 3000 to 3800 (rpm) I have Ben told it needs a timing change the messed up thing is that I have changed the oil 3 times it less than a month and a half not to sure what to do!

Carrie
I bought a 2011 Mazda 3 I sport almost three years ago. Since I’ve owned the car is made what I would call a grinding sound for about a second or two when I first start it. Last week I went out to start it and after it turned over for a second it went right into sounding like a broken timing chain. I still owe 8k on the car so this problem is one that’s left me not knowing what to do. I’ve talked to a couple of techs and they are scared to mess with it and have recommended I take it to a Mazda dealership. I called the dealership and their tech said basically the same thing they were saying about the vvt issues in earlier models. They said it’s likely a problem relayed to poor oil changes. My husband is a mechanic and has done the oil changes regularly in his garage except for the few times I took it to the dealership where I bought because I had a free or discounted oil change. The oil is always kept clean. I’ve yet to have it towed to the dealership because I’m still trying to figure out what to do about it. I’m having a hard time dedicating to almost 2k in repairs when I’m already at least 2-3k upside down on the car. My frustration is through the roof. This car should have lasted many more years before having a problem of this magnitude. The class action lawsuit should included the 2011 M3 i sport. The problem and their excuse for it are exactly the same as it was in previous years.

Spencer
I bought a 2007 Mazda cx7 almost 2 years ago and the timing chain broke now the dealership is asking for prove of oil changes now that I am reading this they are not going to fix it even though it’s covered that is just wrong so now I stuck with a car I am still paying on

Aleem
Bought 2007 cx7. It make a loud noise on startup for few seconds and then timing chain clicking noise whe idling and driving. Mazda should be fined as much as what VW paid for emissions fraud.all the owners should be reimbursed

Nicole
I bought a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 Grand Touring from a Mazda dealership in Vancouver, WA. When I bought the car they told me about a special program they had for my car that if it ever got stolen no matter when as long as I owned it they would give me a $25,000 check. I started noticing a change in the way my car sounded and the way it drove maybe 2 years into buying it. Over the course of the next 2 years I brought it into the Mazda dealership 5 times (the 1st time a female employee tells me over the phone if they can’t fix my car the dealership will have to replace it free of charge then she paused was quiet rols me to hold on a few minutes whispered to someone else got back on the phone with me and told me there was nothing wrong with my car), a different Mazda dealership in Oregon twice, Ron’s Automotive twice, America’s Tire Co three times, a dealership in North Dakota, a dealership in Montana, small spots like costless, autozone, walmart automotive, shine in no time and The Tire Place several times over a year and a half. Almost every single place would look at me tell me they’ll be right back to talk to someone else then come tell me there is absolutely nothing wrong with my car that it was running better than when I bought it. A few of the smaller places would tell me they hear something off but can’t figure out what it would be. After years of this nonsense I had went to go to The Tire Place to put new tires on my car the owner was like holy Shit your car sounds horrible can I take a look? And sure enough in less than 10 minutes he had named off several things I had been telling Mazda dealership were wrong with my car for years. I had that car for almost 8 years the majority of the years it ran like shit, Mazda new but did nothing to fix it and engine failure finally put my poor baby to sleep with less than 86,000 miles on it. Waste of my money on bullshit the dealership could have fixed from the beginning. Now I’ve been without a car for almost 9 months I can’t finance another vehicle since my son had cancer in the meantime ruining my credit, I’m no longer with my ex husband to help me out and my job is unaccounted as unverifiable income all because the Mazda dealership couldn’t do the right thing and fix a vehicle the manufacturer already knew had a problem. To top off the cherry on the pie when my vehicle was stolen after all this chaos and I went in or that special program they tried telling me they had no idea what I was talking about they never heard such a thing so I pulled out my papers and they straightened up looked at me got an attitude and said I know what that is and your not eligible or signed up for it u don’t have cash your credit sucks there’s nothing we can do for you so goodbye. I was furious beyond belief I still freakin am.

Michael
Bought Mazda CX-7 April 2014 paid 18000 all together cash Nov 2016 Turbo charger shot Dealer wants thousands to replace Very sad vechile can’t last more than 2 years spiders in gas tank bearings have been recalled

I purchased my 2009 CX7 about 2 years ago. I failed to notice the knocking sounds from the engine until the following day when I went to starts the car. Later on that day I I called the local Mazda dealer and spoke with the service person, I described the noise to him and he said it was a very common problem, and I have two choices, one sale it fast or fix it for around $2000. After receiving the heart breaking news my little poor family and I had to park Mazda CX7 and buy a old Honda CRV for $800 so we don’t have to walk. We do drive it every now and again but only short distances and with our fingers crossed. I would love to sale it but I’m not the type of person to try and scam someone. The dealerstand know about the common problem and they are only willing to offer me $1500 for the Mazda as a trade in. I use to trust Mazda and spoke highly of them, this car as changed all of that and I make it clear to everyone I know.

I have a 2005 mazda tribute with the 2.3l motor w 130k. I was driving up a hill when without warning heard a loud pop sound followed by a loud knocking noise .I towed it home and found out my motor is blown . Was wondering if I’m eligible to get in on this law suit if there is one

I own a 2007 Mazda Cx 7 TURBO edition. I LOOOOOVE my Cx 7, BUT I also have the VVT problems & EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION with my car! These issues NEED TO BE FIXED & RECALLED BY MAZDA.. If anyone has any suggestions on how we can get this back in court to PROVE that MAZDA IS RESPONSIBLE for All of our SAME PROBLEMS with these vehicles please let me know… I recently have received a Recall notice about a default that can cause the airbag to randomly deploy, but Mazda is fixing the cars in hot climates first. I just want my car fixed, I absolutely love it. It’s just frustrating. Any advice?

Scott
I bought a used 2007 CX-7 from a Mazda dealership that had the timing chain and turbo replaced, but not long after the series of constant issues with nickel and diming began. To cut to the chase 6 months into ownership I went to accelerate onto a freeway on ramp and it just sputtered and the CE light came on. Took it to the dealer and turns out it broke an exhaust valve. Almost $2K into repairs and more things went wrong afterwards, including the transmission failing. I called Mazda directly and explained the situation to them – they basically told me tough shit. The dealership pretty much refused to help instead offering me $1000 as a “good will” trade in towards another one of their vehicles, to which I told them I should drive this piece of shit right through their fucking showroom. I was forced to give it up for voluntary repo because I had lost my job (no way to get to work without a vehicle) and Chase bank was pretty much unforgiving and refused to help at all, even after showing them receipts for all the work performed. Fuck Mazda, fuck Ford for supplying substandard parts and fuck Chase bank, too. They can all suck it and if there is indeed a class action suit brought I’m in.

A ray of hope. My wife has a 2008 CX 7 and right at 120k on the mileage. I had the dealership quote me 1350.00 to fix the VVT and replace the timing chain as well as the guides. It was sounding like a diesel at start up and idle (horrible) for the safety of my wife and kids and after reading these comments we had to do something and not wait for a recall to be issued. When I first called Mazda USA they tried to give me the X Plan and buy a new car from them. My wife and I went round and round since this was very expensive even with the discount. I took the car to the shop under the assumption I was going to have to pay 1300.00 to fix with parts and labor. I made one last effort to call Mazda USA about this. Again they told me that I was out of the warranty period and then I explained that I am not requesting for them to cover 100% of the cost I just want them to do the right thing and stand behind there product. I also have replaced an oil cooler that was a poor design on this car that I explained. I told them I was not going to pursue legal action and I just wanted help. they asked me if the car was in the shop and I said yes. Then they gave me an ref number and then went to work on my behalf with the dealership. About 2 hours want by and then Mazda USA called me back. They told me Mr. Tulsa .. you are a valued Mazda customer and we want to help you. We will only have you pay for parts and we will cover the labor and the price will be $481.60 for the parts. I was honestly emotional they would do anything on my car since was over 50K outside the warranty period. When I returned to the dealership they told me my car was ready and that Mazda took care of the Labor and all I had to pay for was parts. I guess they didn’t realize Mazda USA gave me the price because they tried to charge me 900.00 . I gave them the price that Mazda USA told me and they adjusted my bill. I was very happy and the car runs great!!!!!!!!!!

I bought a 2008 Mazda cx 7 from an auction and droved it about 5 miles then I heard a very loud knocking noises and the car juste died in the middle of the highway, towed it to a mechanic engine is fried, 4000$ went down the drain for about 10 minutes of drive, I know I was conned by the dealer that brought it to the auction and I need help to get back at the scum bags.

Geoff
2010 CX7 74000 miles, extended warrenty up on 8/13/16. Turbo blown, exhaust manifold cracked, $3600 for repairs so far. After reading all these comments I can’t trust this vehicle, Mazda, or their shadey dealers. Mazda dosen’t seem to take any resposibility for this pile of crap that is a manufacturing defect, turbo is garbage, engine is undersized for this vehicle. Will never have another. Why can’t consumer reports or some entity stop this madness, we are being ripped off bigtime. This car has been maintained properly and I have all the records. This is fraud in its ugliest form

Chris
I have a Mazda 2012 CX7 – I’m having issues with the car starting. I finally found that if I put the car in neutral the car will start. What is going on with this.

Robert
We bought our 2007 CX-7 in July last year with 126,000 miles on it. It ran and drove fine. It now has about 147,000 miles on it. Started acting up earlier this year. Replaced the plugs and ran fine again. It recently started up the ticking sound that seems common on here. After the engine was warmed up from driving and you pulled to a stop at a red light, the engine is very loud now. The dealership said we need to replace the VVT, oil cooler and turbo. $5,500. He said they had all been under a recall that expired after 7 years or 70,000 miles. How does a recall expire? I’ve never heard that before. I don’t want to throw good money after bad. We still owe on it. The dealership said that they would give us $1,000 for trade in value and that even if we spent the $5,500 to fix everything, they wouldn’t give us a penny more. That tells me they don’t even believe in their own brand. We’re stuck waiting for it to quit but we don’t trust it to get out of town. Where can we sign up for a lawsuit, assuming it’s going to be a Class Action lawsuit?

Christina
I just bought a 08 Mazda cx 7. Check engine light came on 2 days later, and now about a month of owning it, I have horrible diesel noise. Going to take it in to get the timing chain fix. How do I join this lawsuit because this is ridiculous and wrong of Mazda! !

Krystal
Graduated from college in 2007 and bought new Mazda CX7 Touring, has 83,000 miles on it and going to work it just stopped. I was lucky not to be on the highway and cause an accident. Now to find out the timing chain slipped and caused damage to the engine. Now I have a piece of junk worth nothing. I will never own a Mazda and will tell everyone not to buy.

Eddie
I purchased a used 2006 Mazda 3 with the 2.3 L engine 3 years ago. Last year my engine completely failed without warning. Now, my car is still in my garage because unfortunately I can’t afford a new engine. To make it worse, I am still making payments on the car. This is very frustrating. Mazda has known this engine was a major problem and have done nothing to resolve the issue. I will never own another Mazda in my lifetime, and I will make sure to let all my family and friend know about this.

Ebony
Same issues, smh….nouy a 2007 Mazda CX7 in 2016 with 68K miles on it.. Three years later while driving on highway car slowed down and stopped on me. Had a machanic to look at it and he said same thing “timing” chain. Mazda should have to pay up! How to sue them?

MATT
SO HOW DO YOU JOIN THIS LAWSUIT?

EDWIN
I purchased this vehicle with the same engine issue, of course during the test it was wonderful, and it drove like new. any way I have been industrial Mechanic for several years now. I did my oil change and filter and noticed that the noise disappears when oil gets to the timing chain and components, it takes only less than a second and the ticking noise is gone. So the problem in my opinion is timing chain lack of lubrication at start up. it needs a bath of oil before the start up crank. I was thinking on purchasing a 12 volt oil pump,do all the piping and install a switch next to steering wheel to momentarily send oil to timing chain before the start up.

Heather
I just bought a 2007 Mazda used with 89,000 miles on it six weeks ago and I’ve already paid $700 to fix it. Now the check engine light is on again and it’s the timing chain and the people I bought it from said “not their problem.” I’m totally disgusted. I haven’t even put a 100 miles on it yet!! I bought this car with cash to take care of my mother. This was supposed to be a reliable car to get her to appts but I’m stuck now having to figure out what to do. Do I fix it? Sue? No idea what to do. Any advice would be appreciated!

I got my 2007 Mazda Cx7 in 2013. The dealer told me they put a new engine & turbo so they gave me a 1 year warranty with the vehicle. Only to find out 3 months later I was having engine problems & I took it back and they claimed there was nothing wrong. I advised them of a ticking noise and no power when accelerating and then discovered it was the turbo but after towing it to an actual Mazda shop. Took it back to the lot where I got it & they went out of business. I ended up spending close to $4,000 Not 1 month later and Im having the same problem. Now they told me I am missing a valve and has suggested a new engine which he estimates with parts and labor $5,600.00 …. Its a nice car but too many mechanical issues. Only been able to enjoy my vehicle for no more than 4 months.

To add to your Mazda CX7 frustrations Mazda on August 10, 2016, has a NHTSA Recall # 16V593, Mazda recall # 9716H. Summary of recall “Water may enter front suspension ball joint fitting. Driving on roadways during the winter months in areas that use roadways salts can lead to salt and water intrusion into the ball joint, causing corrosion, which can result in looseness of the ball joint in the fitting. As a result of the looseness a rattle may occur at the lower control arm ball joint. After extended operation in this condition, in the worse case the ball joint and lower control arm may separate.” Safety Risk: “The vehicle may experience significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash”. Remedy: “Dealers will replace the lower control arms”. Recall Status: “Recall INCOMPLETE. Remedy not yet available”. My Mazda CX7 grand touring was purchased new 8/23/11. It is 23,000 miles on it and is well maintained. The circumstances of this recall to not allow me to sell or trade in this vehicle until the recall has been completed. Upon contacting Mazda I was advised that they are working on this and I should be contacted in mid September. To say my customer experience was less than terrific is an understatement. I just have to sit and look at my CX7, cannot sell it or trade it in. Disgusted with Mazda.

I bought the Mazda CX 7 2007 brand new when it first came out. I have always maintained oil change. While driving on the highway it seized and shut down at 62K. I took it to the shop and was told I needed a new engine. Unfortunately I could afford it. Will NEVER buy a Mazda in my lifetime.

Yep… Just had the same problem with the timing chain up here in Canada. 2007 CX7 gt with 75000k miles. Had it for 3 years and did all the proper upkeep. Timing chain just broke resulting in catastrophic engine failure 20 days after my warranty expired. It’s $9000 to install a used engine and I still owe $3200 on it. Mazda needs to own up to this. I loved this vehicle but now I am forced to sell it for parts beacause I will lose even more money if I fix it and sell it. Mazda you sure have made the life of this single dad a lot more difficult. With all the reports of this issue with no resolve I find it hard to imagine me ever purchasing a Mazda again. I also had the famed turbo issue last year as well and had to have it replaced. Even if I like the vehicles I cannot remain loyal to a company that has not remained loyal to it’s customers. I will surely tell my story to each and any person I meet who is thinkin of buying a mazda. If there is a lawsuit in Canada over this issue please let me know.

I have had 2007 CX7 2.5L Turbo since 2009 around 2012 Mazda did the recall work on my VVT it was about 90K at the time. Now I have about 128K miles and recently the vvt failed again, some internal elements went bad. I have the check engine light on with a code P0012 A camshaft Position timing over retarded bank 1 and P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire. I took it to the independent service shop, paid for the whole tuneup (new ignition coils, new spark plugs, new timing set VVT, chain, tensioner etc. as well as sensors related to timing and oil pressure switch next to the VVT. After all that work and OEM parts installed still problem still persist. I wonder if the camshaft or something around there got bit up just enough to be off and not allow the vvt to correct the timing.
