Simplicity Bassinet Recall Issued by Six Retailers August 29, 2008 AboutLawsuits Add Your Comments Six major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Target, J.C. Penny, Kmart, Toys “R” Us and Big Lots!, have agreed to issue a Simplicity Bassinet recall and offer refunds or store credits to consumers who purchased the product at their store. The announcements come one day after the U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) urged people to stop using the bassinets due to a risk of infant strangulation. The retailers voluntarily agreed to stop selling and recall Simplicity Bassinets, since SFCA, Inc., who purchased all of the assets of the manufacturer at a public auction in April 2008, refused to cooperate with the government and accept returns. As we reported yesterday, the CPSC warned parents, consumers and caregivers on August 27, 2008, to stop using the Simplicity 4-in-1 and 3-in-1 convertible “close sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinet models, after at least two infant deaths had been caused by the bassinet’s metal bars being spaced too far apart. The first infant death associated with the Simplicity Bassinet involved a 4-month old girl from Missouri who died on September 2007. The second reported death involved a 5-month old girl from Kansas who died on August 21, 2008. Both infants had their head trapped in between the metal bars of the bassinet.
