Simplicity Bassinet Recall Issued by Six Retailers

|||

Six major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Target, J.C. Penny, Kmart, Toys “R” Us and Big Lots!, have agreed to issue a Simplicity Bassinet recall and offer refunds or store credits to consumers who purchased the product at their store.

The announcements come one day after the U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) urged people to stop using the bassinets due to a risk of infant strangulation.

The retailers voluntarily agreed to stop selling and recall Simplicity Bassinets, since SFCA, Inc., who purchased all of the assets of the manufacturer at a public auction in April 2008, refused to cooperate with the government and accept returns.

The bassinet recall involves nearly 900,000 bassinets manufactured by Simplicity, Inc., of Reading, Pennsylvania, and sold throughout the United States.

As we reported yesterday, the CPSC warned parents, consumers and caregivers on August 27, 2008, to stop using the Simplicity 4-in-1 and 3-in-1 convertible “close sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinet models, after at least two infant deaths had been caused by the bassinet’s metal bars being spaced too far apart.

The first infant death associated with the Simplicity Bassinet involved a 4-month old girl from Missouri who died on September 2007. The second reported death involved a 5-month old girl from Kansas who died on August 21, 2008. Both infants had their head trapped in between the metal bars of the bassinet.

According to the CPSC, the following retailers can be contacted directly to arrange a return for store credit or a refund:

  • Wal-Mart Stores Inc. – (800) 925-6278
  • Kmart Corp. – (800) 659-7026
  • Big Lots! – (866) 244-5687
  • Toys “R” Us Inc. – (800) 869-7787
  • Target – only sold online at www.target.com
  • J.C. Penney – (888) 333-6063

BS! I’m boycotting any of the products this companies makes and urge you to do the same. They won’t even accept responsibility for the crappy, rushed to market defect that is the Simplicity Bassinet. Duh – you own the company now. You won’t be getting any more of my hard earned dollars. Greedy douchebags!

I have been using Spiriva for 3 weeks and experienced a sudden and very severe loss of my pubic hair. This has not affected the hair on my head, except for some mild-moderate itchiness. All of my public hair has fallen off and I have a horrible rash on my vaginal area.

Bought the bassinet in January 2008. Took it apart was going to sell it to get it out of the way and realized that it was the exact one in the picture. I was not aware of the recall since I had already purchased it. Can it still be returned?

  16. Heather

I have one of the Simplicity bassinets that was recalled. I was unaware of it until today when I went to sell it. I got it as a gift at my baby shower over 2 years ago. Can I return it somewhere….do not have any packaging or receipts.

  17. Megan

I too have this bassinett and was going to sell it….after my baby and my sister’s baby have used it! I was mortified to hear about this recall. I don’t have packaging or receipt either. Please let me know if anyone finds out if I can still return this!

  18. molly

I too have the Simplicity bassinet that I just learned it was recalled when I went to research how to put it back together to use it! Burlington will not accept the return. Anyone else have sucess?

  19. Gabby

Neither Walmart nor Toys R Us takes it back. I tried without luck. They keep asking for the UPC code that of course I do not have, so they can’t/won’t help me. What a shame! They sell defected items, but do not take responsibility for it.

  20. Alana

I found out about this a little while ago, and haven’t gave up. I have my instruction book which has the model number for the Simplicity Winnie the Pooh 4-in-one bassinet.

    Model #3112DOH6
    Manufacturer’s Code# 4906TW

I called the Walmart phone number today and told them I was holding onto it for the next child (which we were!) and gave her the model # and she looked up the UPC and Item # for me and said that my local Walmart should return it for store credit and if there is any issues (which there has been every other time/walmart I;ve tried to take it to) to call the 1800 walmart # in the store and they will talk to them.

    UPC# 74102203112
    ITEM# 2605254

Good luck and hope that you who couldn’t return it have been able to! Don’t give up…I wanted my credit and I will get it! 🙂
