Space Heater Fires Result in Recall of 500,000 “Smart” Devices

Govee smart space heaters could overheat due to faulty wireless control features, posing a risk of fires and burn injuries.

Federal safety officials are warning consumers to immediately stop using GoveeLife and Govee “smart” space heaters, indicating that these products may pose a serious risk of fires, which could cause property damage, severe injuries or death.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the Govee space heater warning on November 7, following multiple reports of the heaters catching fire.

The problems appear to be linked to the “smart” space heater’s wireless control features, which may be defective and cause the devices to overheat. The CPSC indicates that testing has determined that the smart heaters do not comply with safety standard UL 1278, which is a voluntary industry standard that covers movable or hanging room heaters.

The manufacturer has received at least 113 reports involving issues with the smart devices overheating, including seven instances that resulted in space heater fires and one injury.
