The cholesterol drug Lipitor was potentially linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in otherwise healthy and active users. As a result of Pfizer’s alleged failure to adequately warn about this potential risk, former users pursued financial compensation through a Lipitor diabetes lawsuit.

Lipitor Lawsuits

OVERVIEW: Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a statin-based cholesterol drug developed by the Pfizer subsidiary Warner-Lambert. The medication is one of the best selling drugs in the world, and generated more than $125 billion in sales before the patent expired in 2011. Several generic Lipitor versions are also now available.

Part of a class of medications known as “statins”, Lipitor is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, which is prescribed to help reduce the amounts of cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood. While the drug has been used by millions of Americans, it appears that the manufacturers failed to adequately warn that Lipitor side effects may increase the risk of diabetes.

LIPITOR DIABETES RISK: A number or studies and reports have found that there is a link between Lipitor and type 2 diabetes, which can pose serious health concerns for individuals who develop the condition.

In February 2012, the FDA announced it was requiring new label warnings on Lipitor and other statins to alert users to the possible increased risk of diabetes, but many believe the current Lipitor diabetes warnings remain insufficient.

The FDA required this label update after a number of studies suggested that the drug may increase an individual’s risk of developing diabetes:

  • In a study published in The Lancet in February 2010, researchers found that side effects of statins, which include Lipitor and other drugs, may increase the risk of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Researchers from University of Glasgo analyzed 13 different prior studies to identify the potential risk of diabetes with Lipitor and other statins.
  • In March 2011, a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that users of Lipitor had about a 33% higher risk fo developing type 2 diabetes over five years when compared to those taking a placebo. The study looked specifically at the link between Lipitor and diabetes.
  • A follow up study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in June 2011 further highlighted concerns, finding that high doses of Lipitor and other statins were linked to onset of diabetes. Among individuals given intensive-dose statin therapy, the rate of diabetes was about 1 out of every 500 users.
  • In January 2012, a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that older women taking Lipitor and other statins may face a 50% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers examined data on more than 160,000 women who participated in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) between the ages of 50 and 79, finding that nearly 10% of women who took statins developed type 2 diabetes within 9 years, compared with 6.4% of those who did not take statins but still developed diabetes.
  • In July 2014, a study published in Diabetes Care found that the longer people used statins, like Lipitor, the higher their risk of diabetes. Researchers found that those who stuck to statin therapy the longest have a 32% increased risk of diabetes over those who do not use Lipitor or similar drugs.
  • A study published in September 2014 in The Lancet found that the enzyme Lipitor and similar drugs designed to inhibit to control cholesterol is also tied to a number of factors affecting blood sugar, which could explain the increase in diabetes risk.
  • A report published in September 2015 by the Institute of Safe Medication Practices warned that Lipitor diabetes cases among women may indicate a wider problem with prescribing statins to women that may require different cholesterol guidelines based on gender.

I got news for everyone -I took Lipitor for 5 years and as all of all of these people developed Diabetes type 2 .I have been in this lawsuit for 7 years [that’s right 7 years ] the lawsuit keeps being changed from Federal court to State court because these Drug company’s have all the power and money in the world and can control the courts . I don’t think I will live long enough to receive any thing from this lawsuit and if I ever do the lawyer’s will take most of it anyway . So it’s a losing battle for your health , life and pocket book !!!!

Had a heart attack at age 50 in 1994. Dr claimed high cholestorol, 244, not overweight, but smoked. Put on Lipitor. Was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 4 yrs later. Have neurapathy bad in feet, and now am on Insulin. Also take metformin, switched to Atorvastin, finofibrate, gabapenten, tramadol, glyburide. Enough with the meds already. I have developed drop foot which with the neurapathy is quite painful at times. How do I find my medical information from way back then to prove anything? Never recommended to see an endocrinologist. Don’t know where Drs are, can find some, but after all these years do they have records anywhere?

This drug caused my husbands knees to go. He had bilateral knee surgery. Tore his patella and ligaments. He never had these problems until he started taking this drug.

My doctor prescribe this Lipator for me to start Oct 16, 2015 and he didnt advise me of any side effects nor did the pharmacy..I am on my second bottle and I just took one tonight before google Lipator, but I found this Lawsuit advertisement and as of tonight…I will stop taking Lipator and I will email my doctor as well..I am suppose to be taking it for my high cholesterol, I went to the dr on 6/5/15 and had my blood test taken and on 6/19/15, my dr said I was prediabetic, had high cholesterol and that I could loose some weight..I did loose 13 lbs, but gained it back during the Thanksgiving, Christmas holidays and New Years day-food.. I am reading all of these comments about the risk of taking this medication and I am not happy about it and my dr never told me about any risk, he just said I have to take it for the rest of my life..I was not reexamed before taking this medication by my dr. As of tonight I will not take the remaining pills and will let my dr know..I have not seen my dr since Oct 16, 2015 and he has not call me either..I do eat healthy foods before I went to the dr on 6/5/15, I eat oatmeal some times…

i was taking lipator and had type 2 diabetes and all of the nasty complications that go with it in 2010 i had enough i stopped taking all the poison and and it was a miracle i lost almost 200 pounds and dont have diabetes anymore the dr says its in remission ya it is and me taking lipator is in remission also i wonder if her stock in the big drug co that sells this crap is in remission now this is a real hoot i just got some new precriptions handed to me for my hart that thay say is only working at 30% huh i wonder what caused that let me think LIPATOR YES THATS RIGHT thay r trying to fix my hart by killing me with lipator again not this time greed is a nasty problem in the usa and im no exception please help me sue them for as much as we can get ty JOANNE ANDERSON

I took Lipitor for 30 days. I was in the hospital for 7 weeks with Acute Pancreatitis. I loss half of my Pancreatitis, my right kidney, and became a type 2 diabetic. Now the attorney till me I don’t qualify for this lawsuit because I’m not a woman. Really. What BS is that.

I TO TOOK LIPITOR AND BECAME A Type 2 diabetic,what is worse Is the neuropathy my balance is way off track.I walk with s cane but still fall 4 or 5 or Mon t he ago I fell in garage. Had a concussion 13 stitches and broke my elbow..if I’m suffering from taken this pill,Shane on you.

Around 2003 I started taking Lipitor. I received the medication thru a patient assitance program. Meaning I didn’t have to pay for the medicine. Therefore I’m not sure I would qualify for any kind of compensation. At present time I take Atorvastatin.. I have been taking it for about two years give or take. I also have type 2 diabetes,high blood pressure, neuropathy, and various chronic pain. Take neurotin, naproxin,,3 for high blood pressure, actos,& glimiperide for diabetes and insulin. I can’t think of everything right now. I’m sixty six now. hope this is enough to be considered for compensation. Thank you.

Like so many others I am now a diabetic started taking Lipitor many years ago then in 2007 was told I was a diabetic did not understand why or how. I use to work as a store manager and in nursing homes but I have leg cramps gained so much weight had to have surgery to loose weigh and before I started taking this bad drug I had no kind of pain I worked all the time. I have a lawsuit but I need help trying to get a new one I can get a loan against my prejudgement but my lawyer will not agree to signing any papers. I cannot even go and pick walnuts because it is so hard on me. And this can also affect the bones in your body also. My eye sight is bad now and I am only 55 my husband has cancer so it is hard when it takes all my SSI just to pay someone to help us. Any suggestions or help email me please.

I have been on Lipitor since 2013 and at the end of 2013 I was told I had diabetes type 2. I have never been as sick as I have been being on Lipitor. I now have to take Metformin to control my diabetes and check my blood sugars 3 times a day. Which is a pain to do especially when you are working and do not get awhole lot of time for breaks. I can not believe that my doctor put me on this drug and did not tell me that I might get diabetes type 2. I am very upset about this and would love to get my life back. Free from diabetes but I know that is not possible now.

I was a healthy young woman and I was diagnosed with high cholestrol around 2006. My doctor put me on Lipitor and I took it for about 2 or 3 years. Then Lipitor became very expensive to afford so I went on Zocor. Now recently in Dec 2014 I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes and my family has no history of diabetes . I heard the ad about Lipitor and am wondering if it was Lipitor that did this

In early 2011 I was diagnosed with a blocked carotid artery and had surgery to clear the blockage. The doctor then had me start using the drug Atorvastatin (Lipitor). Soon after starting the statin drug I was diagnosed with the beginning stages of type 2 diabetes and neuropathy in both feet. At that point my doctor started me on Metformin. Since then my beginning stages of type 2 diabetes has gone full blown type 2 and recently I have had to start using insulin to get my blood sugars under control. Also my doctor had me start using Lyrica for the ever increasing neuropathy in my feet. The totally amazing and highly coincidental part of this whole scenario is that Pfizer, a pharmaceutical giant, manufactures both Lipitor and Lyrica, the cause and remedy of what sounds like my, and many other peoples ailments.

I was put on Lipitor by my Doctor several years ago. Took it for about 1 year. It wasn’t helping my cholestorl at all. Tried Zocor and Tricor they didn’t help to much. But, Tryglicerids were high. I had to get a new Doctor because of insurance. When I did because my tryglcerids were high she checked for diabetes. Sure enough it was there. I am type 2. I now take simistain. My tryglicerids are still high. I take 1,000 mg metformin everyday. My last a1c was 6.9. I am over weight. I weight 199 am 5 ft tall. Working on the weight. I have breathing problems and I am on oxygen. I use to walk everywhere. Now I have trouble just walking a half block without pain. I get muscle spasms and cramps in my legs and feet. Both my hips bother me. I can’t even stand long enough to wash dishs without hurting. Not sure what I am going to do. I guess I just have to live with it.

I was put on Lipitor by my Doctor several years ago and when having a regular physical exam diabetes was found. The doctor took me off of Lipitor immediately and I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and put on a diabetic medicine, pill form, and over the years I have developed heart disease and now I am on injections for my diabetes. No family members have ever had diabetes, so after hearing all that I have, I believe that the Lipitor had something to do with me developing diabetes, and possibly cause of my heart disease. I am now 65 years of age and have dealing with this problem for many years.

I wasn’t aware of Lipitor causes diabetes until I saw the lawsuit for it on the media. Even when I went to the doctor it was never mentioned, I was told “You have diabetes 2 and you need to take metformin for it” never once was I told that it may be caused by Lipitor. This a scam to keep you taking medication and keeping the doctors and the manufacturers rich. Some of them don’t really care about the people they serve. I see many lawsuits on t.v. about medication that suppose to help, but turn-out to do more harm than any thing. JUSTFEDUP

In USA drug company research and get FDA approval for fantasy of making big time $$$$$$$ (why???) They think they are scientist with PHD’ spend money for education and once out of education most of them dream to be printing money machine. Every so often new drug approval comes and as soon as people use it and in few years recalls. Next attorney’ turn to represent client in class action law suit and throw small money to people and keep pocketful for their firm. But in reality for ordinary illness about 200 which is I would say already grand fathered in the sense that their side effects are well known to professional. I am in USA 25+ years, off/on my doctor prescribed me such medication but once I read detail printed literature I scared to take it. For example I had Vioxx from Merck, had recall but thank god I never took it. In short, should stop such practice of approval of new drug or chemical esp. Stop such clinical study for which already grand father medicine is existing. Do research for cure for disease for which no medicine is yet discovered. Also such pharma company should bear the expenses if their drug caused them diabetic or any life threatening illness.

I was on Lipitor for years and was told I had Type 2 diabetes. I took diabetes medications for 4 years. They tried to put me on insulin but after a month my blood sugar plumeeted and I suddenly went into a diabetic coma, so my doctor stopped the insulin and went to januvia. About 3 years ago my doctor took me off the lipitor. About 2 years ago my health insurance provider changed and new one would not cover Januvia so my doctor switched me to Glyburide and 2 days after starting to take it my blood sugar plumetted and I went into a diabetic coma again. My doctor took me off it and I was on no diabetic medication for about 2 months, but when the doctor did my A1C it was perfect. I have not taken any diabetes medicine for 2 years and my last A1C was 117. I have not changed my diet in any way as a matter of fact my diet would probally be called high diabetes risk as my only drink is soda and I eat a lot of prepared foods. I do not do any excercise as I am bed ridden as a result of strokes. I strongly believe my type 2 diabetes is only the result of taking lipitor and it went away as soon as I stopped taking lipitor. I am so glad I never got started taking insulin as once started your body depends on it and you can’t get off it.

I was taking Lipitor since 2009 before I had a stroke, May 2011 I had a major Heart attack with a triple bypass and I was still taking the Lipitor until I change the doctor and he prescribe me Crestor 100% better and have me stop with Lipitor. Another side effect of leg Lipitor are cramps constantly. Now in 2014 I am 49 years old with a history of a stroke (age 44)and heart attack (age 46) come to find out that Lipitor may have triggered all that.

My wife has taken Lipitor for many years and she never has a pain free day. She has even had to start walking with the help off a walker. She has fallen several times ! She developed Kidney cancer in 2004 and now has only one kidney. A year ago , she had heart failure and almost didn’t make it. She is still being treated for it, since being in the hospital her Dr. Put her on Simvastatin. The fatigue she suffers with is awful and the pain in her legs, back , etc.,and the weakness she suffers with has also gotten worse. We thought that it was from the heart failure but after reading all of the other things that have happened to others who have taken these same drugs, we have to wonder if it isn’t the cause for what has happened to her. She has also put on a lot of weight , even though she has never eaten a lot and never snacks.! The reason she had been on the Lipitor for so many years was because the Dr.had diagnosed her with both Neuropathy and Fibromyalgia, which she still suffers from. We are now confused and scared about whether to continue taking this medication !!

my mother was diagnosed with diabetes- it doesn’t run in our family so I was surprised-I had to watch her go thru so many changes in her eating- then she was in the hospital with too low blood sugar and I was sure she was going to die, it broke my heart-she passed away November 15 2012 .I wish she wouldn’t of had to go thru this im sure it helped to shorten her life and cause many other problems she had. luckily a pa found out from blood work that she had diabetes-we thought she was going to die from while she sat in her chair;we didn’t think of it much until she was not waking up.this was the last thing diabetes because it doesn’t run in our family

I was put on atorvastatin 20mg for high cholesterol. I was awaiting surgery for a work related injury and during a routine blood test 4 weeks after starting atorvastatin my fasting blood glucose rose from 75 (blood test 8 weeks ago) to 113 then to 123 on the next blood test about 8 weeks after starting. I also began to have excrutiating pain in my hips and legs that moved to my arms. I felt so horrible that I went back the dr. I was sent to a nephrologist because my kidneys had begun to fail. All because of the pharmaceutical companies are run by a bunch of money hungry 1%ers.

The VA doctors have had me taking atorvastatin for as long as I can remember. Because of my diabetes my kidneys at functioning at about 22 %. My Physicians Asst. is talking about putting me on the transplant list

Have been on Lipitor for almost two years after taking another statin drug. Doctor has now diagnosed me with prediabetes (some medical professionals say that there is no longer a prediabetic, either you are diabetic or you aren’t) I brought this up to my doctor, but she says it’s all hogwash. I don’t agree. I need to know how to get involved in the suit as well.

I was on Lipitor for years and was told I have type 2 diabetes in 2009, I am now a simvastatin and metformin, why can’t these companies warn us ? this disease is wearing me down, constant blurred vision , can’t lose enough weight, foot pain, just exhausting , all of it. I suffered a heart attack in January 2002.. Specific diagnostic test indicated a narrowing of the Mid Circumflex Artery in my heart.. I resisted an invasive stint placement at the time, and my Cardiac Dr. prescribed Lipitor 10mg per day, Asprin 81mg per day, Plavix 75mg per day, Metoprolol 50mg twice a day, and Isosorbide ER 30mg per day.. Stating i would need to take this medication indefinitely, with routine follow up visits and blood tests to monitor my blood sugar and thyroid levels. I see my Cardiologist twice a year..

I was prescribed and started using Lipitor in the mid 1990’s by my doctor. I suffered a heart attack in 2004 and diagnosed with type two Diabetes in 2010 or 2011. As a matter of fact, by my previous doctor and my current one, I was switched to Crestor from Lipitor less than six months ago. The reasoning for the switch was due to pricing of the two medications…never did anyone tell me that Lipitor may’ve caused diabetes.

i had been having overwhelming muscle/joint aches.borderline diabetic, hgb aic ranges 5.8-6.2 for a couple of yrs.trying to bring it down with diet and some walking.no diabetes in the family,had been on lipitor for yrs,planning on cutting it down to see if aches go away.was just checking/rechecking side effects of my medications when i stumbled into this.

Maybe that’s my problem after reading all these comment , they sound like me. Ive been on Lipitor for years, I was diagnosed with diabetes was put on meds but got it under control enough that I don’t take the meds at the moment, was also diagnosed with thyroid condition and have been put on meds for that now my joints hurt all the time. Im about ready to stop the Lipitor.

I am 48yrs old and ive bn taking atorvastatin,for about 3-5 yrs and 2 yrs ago was diagnosed with type2 diabetes, and was put on metformin, I had a allergic reaction and was rushed to the hospital when then was placed on Humalog and glipizide another med emergency with the Humalog well still on the atorvastin and knew nothing till abt 2 months ago when I was changed to another med for chlolesterol, yet still didn’t realize this was the reason for me having diabeted know and had to have a thyroidectomy as well ive bn thru a heck of a lot because of this drug, this junk surely has reduced my life unable to work and been fighting for disability for 7 yrs now and being denied over and over again, I hope I don’t die before I see this mess to an end.

The article quoted from the Lancet stated that there was a 9% increase in risk. Increase from what? From a population of those with high cholesterol and triglycerides that didn’t take a statin, or from the general population? If the latter, we are comparing apples and oranges as those with high cholesterol levels tend to have other risk factors for type II diabetes. If the former, are there other factors that can explain the increase? The Lancet article said there was no causal link between taking statins and developing diabetes. But it appears to be blood in the water to the trial attorneys.

I had a heart attack in 2000 and was put on Zocor…I changed doctors and he put me on Lipitor. I have been on a statin for 13 years. About six years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. On June 13, 2013 I hade another heart attack and now take Plavix and lisinopril . I take glipizide for the diabetes. I suffer extreme muscle pain from the statin. These doctors are legally killing us with these meds.

I had a heart attack in April of 1996. I have been on Lipitor for the last 17 years. Developed problems are Type II Diabetes, Problems with my eyes, and feet. I am so very upset with the Pharmaceutical Companies who take our money and make us very ill. The more medications you take the more you need. This is the first year my wife and I started to really see the information on television about Lipitor. I am not a heavy guy and never have been overweight. I will be 69 this year and I have so many problems with my health, I just don’t know where to start!!!

For years the doctor had me taking Lipitor. Since I started taking this medication, Not so long after that, I was diagnosed with diabetes.I have been diagnosed with so many things that have affected my body. I have been diagnosed with nerve disorder,muscle pain,thyroid disease where I went from size 7 to size 14.This problem have affected my kidneys, and my right eye have also been damaged.My doctor have not taken me off of this medicine even after the commercial on television. It’s a shame that the Pharmaceutical companies continues to sell this medicine to the consumers, and cause so much damage.

Statins…. the drug that stimulates the economy. The pharmaceutical companies get rich off selling the statins… then the many drugs needed to combat the side effects of statins…now the lawyers will get rich off the lawsuits. It is unfortunate that so many doctors were so brainwashed by the drug companies for so long.

I have been taking statins since 2000. Not only am I a diabetic now. I had other symptoms that could never be explained. I had severe muscle cramps in my stomach and legs and even pain in my arm. Once I had a cramp in my whole body and ended in the emergency room but nothing was found. Then I realized that when I was on Crestor I developed pain and cramps again so I refused to take Crestor. The pain and cramps went away immediately. Now I am fighting diabetes. No doctor could find out what was causing the cramps or joint pain. Wasted money on many many tests.

I had been taking pravastatin for several years and developed diabetes I was on holiday and forgot my cholesterol medicine I noticed by sugar level went from 155 to 90 I told my doctor and she said she had never heard of it but phone the pharmacist who said the same However he said try again in all I did 5 times She said that the satin was the best for me and keep taking it. About 2 years ago after she quit I had a new doctor and he changed it to Lipitor which put my sugar up even higher He did admit that Lipitor has been known to raise sugar levels and completely stopped me taking it. My sugar is still high

My doctor liked to think that Lipitor was the greatest development in medicine since the invention snuff, and still does. My Cardiologist feels the same way. I had no idea that Lipitor would eventually lead to DMII, which i now have and it makes me wonder. Has the pharmasutical companies stuck it to the American public again all in the name of science? It isn’t the first time and certainly not the last.

I started taking Liptor many years ago, then developed muscle and join pain. I stopped taking the Liptor my Dr. put me on Simvasation, around 2005 and then I found out I was a type II diabetic, never thought I’d be a diabetic, I’m thin, watch what I eat and exercise. Then I see an ad about Liptor being linked to diabetes. I was never told of this risk!

Since taking Liptor I have been diagnosed with Diabetes, I also suffer with memory loss, was diagnosed with a brain tumor, suffer with joint and muscle pain, tiredness along with weakness, thyroid disease. Pfizer should have warned us about this…help!

Been taking Lipitor for over 10 years and early last year was told i have type two diabetes .Im a young 68 yo woman and still going .Why do i have this as theres no diabetes in my family now i know why im on metformin for diabetes its the lipitor that caused it . The drug company never informed me, no label on my pills and im very upset as i just saw theres a lawsuit .Now have diabetes and all that goes with it the rest of my life a very serious chronic deases . Lots can go wrong even loose my limbs ,eye sight and more now what can i do .Whom do i contact to get on this lawsuit . Im pissed .

I have been using statins for at least 10 years before being diagnosed type 2 diabetes. I had to tell my G P that I had diabetes! He crassly went on to tell me my problem is that there is two of me. After getting a new doctor i later found I had Hashimoto and my ability to lose weight was fifty times more difficult than normal. I later had to tell my endocrinologist , who refused me synthroid for years, that I had thyroid cancer. I feel that I am constantly being blamed for weight issues, not the medications that undermine each other.
