Honda ATV Recall: 2008 Honda FourTrax Foreman 4×4

American Honda Motor Co. has issued an ATV recall for the Honda TRX500 ATV, also known as the Honda FourTrax Foreman 4×4. A defect has been discovered with the electrical steering shaft of the off-road vehicle. The steering could fail unexpectedly, causing the rider to lose control and crash.

The FourTrax recall applies to about 1,400 model year 2008 Honda TRX500 ATVs sold throughout the United States between October 2007 and March 2008. The ATVs were sold in red, black, olive, white and camouflage. A Honda wing logo is printed on the fuel tank with “TRX500” printed on the side panel below the seat.

In cooperation with the Consumer Product Saftey Commission, Honda has asked owners to stop riding the recalled ATVs and contact their dealer to schedule an appointment for a free repair. The continued use of the Honda FourTrax Foreman 4×4 could pose a serious risk of injury or death for riders.

All terrain vehicles are designed to be ridden at fast speeds over rough and difficult terrain. During the first four months of 2008, there have already been several ATV recalls issued as a result of defects that could increase the risk of injury for riders. This includes another Honda TRX 500 ATV recall which was issued in January 2008 for the 2007 model year, also known as the Honda Foreman and Foreman Rubicon. That recall was issued due to a defect which could allow water to enter the throttle position sensor, which could cause the throttle to stick open, posing a risk of injury.

Honda has indicated that they are not aware of any reports of injury associated with this week’s FourTrax recall.

Is this recall still valid? We have had issues with our 2008 Honda Foreman 500’s PS light coming on and losing power steering for years. The dealer at the time said he could do nothing since we could not duplicate the issue in front of him.
