OVERVIEW: “Just For Men” hair coloring was originally released in 1987, and is advertised as a hair, beard and mustache dye specifically to cover up gray hair for men.

There are a host of products in the line, from beard and mustache coloring kits to hair and side burns and even some that are designed to add a touch of gray to hair.

Over the past few years, concerns have emerged about the growing number of reports involving severe chemical burns and other allergic reactions among “Just for Men” users.

The side effects of Just For Men may include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Burning of the skin
  • Swelling of the skin
  • Severe itching
  • Blisters and weeping sores
  • Trouble breathing due to throat swelling

“JUST FOR MEN” ALLERGIC REACTIONS: Hundreds of reports have been submitted by men who had used the product for years but suddenly suffered severe chemical burns and swelling of the face. In many cases, the “Just for Men” problems emerge long after the dye was first used.

While some have speculated that the company may have changed the formulation of Just For Men, Combe officials have publicly denied that. Sudden allergic reactions among men may also be linked to changes in body chemistry among users.

“Just For Men” dye contains p-Phenylenediamine, an organic compound that is considered one of the most prevalent allergens in the world.

In May 2009, the medical journal Dermatitis listed it as the tenth most prevalent allergen in patch tests, and it was declared Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in 2006.

Ive used JFM for years with no problem…now i have sores with pus and very bad itching!…its horrible…dont know what to do!

I’ve used this product JFM – 2 other times in last few months and had no issues. Just used it again a few days ago and my face has felt like its sorta on fire and been itching really bad. I don’t think ill ever touch it again. Hope this itching goes away soon and is very uncomfortable.. I cant really tell if its burned bc i have a very big beard and its dark. I don’t think I am blistering yet but def itching a lot.

I used jfm beard dye last sunday…it is now saturday of the following week…the area around my mouth has been blistering and oozing all week…i wash my face atleast 5-6 times a day and no change. I just bought pure aloe vera gel and applied to the blisters…it immediately burned…and then the oozing puss dried out the aloe vera and turned my mouth area white and crusty…so i washed my face again and reapplied the aloe vera…i hope this works…they should be sued and their product discontinied.

Just used this product and about 2 hour later the burning and itching is intolerable. Went on google to see if I was the only one experiencing this and came across this. My face is super red going to wait this out and see what happens.

My comments are the same as the other gentlemen. Followed directions, applied correctly, and shampoo but shortly, burning skin, itching, ans swelling of face caused me to go to emergency care.

Same issues. Bought for beard and moustache in Bahrain. Applied for 3 minutes on my moustache and within an hour, dryness, burning sensation and cold sore like symptoms. Antiseptic wipes and Vaseline helped ease the pain.

Used JFM beard dye for 2 years without any problems, however during the summer of 2020 I immediately started to have severe RASH eith ozing clear liquid coming out. Could not help not to scrach my face. A fair ALTERNATIVE to JFM is Blackbeard for Men Formula X Instant Brush-On Beard Color on ebay. Doesnt cause any reaction, but lasta onky for 1 day.

Used jfm many of times. First few times nothing at all then a little itching on last time so this time did not even use as much dye on my beard and now have blisters oozing liquid having to take benydryl and ice pack on my face as waiting for dermatologist to open this morning so that I can get something to help with this as can’t even shave either. Been using JFM for 3 months. This time, even though the skin patch test came out clear, I needed medical attention. In 3 days the swelling was over my atoms apple, i almost went to emergency room. I had shortness of breath, dizziness and accelrated heart rate. Feels like a chemical burn. Blisters on lips under beard, oozing yellow/white liquid, burning, itching, painful, entire face swelled up. Doctor perscribed antbiotic, steroids and pepcid for antihistamine. Not sure if i have permanent damage. I dont want this to happen to other people. I will be filing a lawsuite. These companies get away with flagrant use of hazardous chemicals. Now that im researching the ingredients more, even cancer mat be in the future.

Hour after using the product, my face started itching and now it’s burning and pus is leaking from my face onto my shirt. I can’t get any sleep, my face is so dry other than the pus and this is going on my 4th day of being in discomfort

HAVE USED JFM FOR ABOUT A YEAR (NEVER A PROBLEM) UNTIL NOW BURNING, ITCHING, SWELLING, BLISTERS DRAINING PUS JUST LEFT THE WALK IN CLINIC ON MY WAY TO THE PHARMACY TO PICK UP 2 PRESCRIPTIONS MAYBE THIS WILL HELP. I have used the Just For Men product for many years, but recently the company must have changed their formula as I noticed a different color during the test patch application of the product a few months ago. There are no specific directions regarding the test patch, but the formula must have changed, as I had this recent experience of swelling, blisters oozing pus, itching, and pain. This was very uncomfortable as it also affected my ability to sleep comfortably as well and went on for some time. Please beware and careful when using this product as they will change ingredients and not state it on the packaging. I saw the dermatologist who prescribed medication that began to provide some relief. Be very, very careful if you decide to use this product.

I have used just for men beard dye medium brown for a year and a half. The last box I purchased has given me a severe burn on both sides of my face. The reaction has been so intense that I have swelling, itching, and dryness all over my head. I could actually smell chemicals in this last formula that I hadn’t in the past. I will never use this product again.

Just like everyone else here I’ve used jfm for about a year with no problems. Then I bought this last box of med. Brown and you guessed it burning and itching like crazy with clear yellowish liquid oozing. It’s been 3 days now and no signs of clearing up. I can’t shave because the sores are so bad and it hurts like hell to touch it let alone shave it. What can I do?

This just for men beard dye is a extremely dangerous product and should be taken off the market imediatly. Never used to be bad but they have diffenently changed the formula. Bad news!

Used just for men a year with no problem bought a new box m55 real black now my face is burned and leaking puss liquid and will not stop leaking or itching it’s horrible can’t sleep at all what happened …..WOW I’m losing my mind.

Yup, I have experienced the exact same issues as most of you. I had no issues using this product in the fall, but the last 2-3 times have gotten progressively worse. I, too have severe itching all over my beard area and a few spots that are oozing yellow puss. Feels like my skin is burning. How the hell can they still sell this stuff? Shouldn’t there be a mass recall by now.

I have the exact same story as everyone else. Been using JFM for the last year with no problems. The last two applications in Feb & March have caused severe itching, rash, oozing and pain that is awful. I will NEVER use this again. I am highly frustrated.

I’m having the same issues, I didn’t realize what the issue was until I searched on how to relieve the discomfort. Then I came across this page regarding JUST FOR MEN. I’ve used their product for years, and recently they have a new box indicating NEW FORMULA. Ever since I’ve experienced redness, swelling and severe itching on my face. If I wanted to shave my beard off I couldn’t because I couldn’t walk around with my skin in its present condition.

My story is pretty much the same as everyone else. Severe burning, itching and swollen lips. It started on the third application from the same box. But my question is what can be done now and how long will this last? It has been almost a week now with no signs of letting up. In fact I had to leave work on the 5th day because I couldn’t take the itching and pain any longer. I am very concerned it could damage my skin for life.

Used JFM to dye my brows for about 4 months. Everything was great. Then, I had a severe skin reaction. My eyebrow skin scabbed up and was oozing clear/pale yellow liquid.

I highly recommend not using this product. I had used once prior, November 2020, without symptoms. In February 2021 I experienced, swelling, itching, burns, and extreme discomfort. No matter how much moisturizer, aloe, etc. the burning and dryness continues. I shaved off the beard as the hair was so dried out, and then saw the damage to skin/lips. This product is very powerful and destructive to face.

My face is killing me, itchy, bumpy, yellow-ish fluids pouring out. I am not one for rashes, never have been, never will but this stuff is toxic! Unbelievable that this is even possible in 2021, it must be a production error. Even my lips are numb and flaky, especially my top one. Please warm others!

I used this for my eyebrows for years. I got a new package and now my eyebrows are red and raw. Luckily I don’t seem to have it as bad as others are stating but my eyebrows itch like crazy and my eyes and eyebrows are bright red and swollen.

JFM disfigured my face..when I first used the black color all seems well, until I used the dark brown from the new packaging..quarantined at home in Montreal Canada, I decided to try the Dark brown for more natural look..however, I saw that they changed the packaging, yet I bought it, bcuz I never had problem before with JFM before.. Well, I used the product while in the shower, I was awaken very early the next morning with my face on fire, itchiness, swollen lips, eye brows & jaw line..my lips became very hard and soon my face was oozing pus and it became worse as the days went by… it been two months and my face is permanently scarred..I had no choice but to shave my beard off and try to work on healing my skin..hopefully the scar will fade in time.. I would never use this product or advise anyone to use it..it wi destroy your face.

I used the just for men mustache and beard dye for the first time on 2/5/2021 and a few hours later my face and around my lips started turning red, swelling, burning and itching. I was supposed to have attended a good friend’s homegoing services today 2/6/2021 and couldn’t because of this.

Grew a beard during lockdown around last Easter time. Applied medium brown 4/5 times, through the summer to cover grey and was all looking great. However I remember packaging changed around September ‘20, and omg like so many others my face had a severe allergic reaction once had applied, delayed about a day after, akin to symptoms experienced by others lasting a week. They must have changed something inside as well as the packaging. Product should be banned from sale

Ive only recently began using JFM medium brown a few months ago and the two times that I have applied it to my beard in accordance with the instructions on the box…It has left my face with an itchy red rash under my beard and dry, cracked lips with sores on each corner of my mouth. Its been 3 weeks since I last applied JFM and my lips and face are still on fire.

Hi guys I bought a boy of the dark brown black on Saturday applied to my face not even for 5 minutes before washing it off woke up the next morning to my face all red and blisters starting to come out Monday morning my face was swollen and the blisters had doubled in size ( definitely won’t be buying again not worth the money or the pain highly wouldn’t recommend)

I’m not sure of the exact date, but I know about 5 years ago their directions were to apply and leave on for 10 minutes. While I may have had a little inching, it was bearable. The last time I used their product I noticed they changed their directions and shortened the time down to 5minutes. It burned my face so bad the doctor had me shave my beard off and prescribed a burn creme for the redness and welts on my face. The pain and itching was unbearable. I noticed some comments on hear saying that they didnt change their formula, but I don’t know how that would be true considering they marketed a new shorter time from 10 min to 5 min. I’ve been using touch of grey for 15 years, and have only had severe reactions with the new 5 minute formulation. DON’T USE THIS PRODUCT!!!

Been using this product for about one year and everything has been fine with absolutely NO reaction whatsoever. Dyed my beard early January 2021 and had an adverse reaction, my skin became red, itchy and inflamed the following day, however I thought that maybe I had left the dye on for too long. Gave it another go a couple of days ago, ensuring that I only left the dye on for the recommended time. However I woke up during the night wanting to scratch my face off and couldn’t sleep. My face and neck 48hrs later is red, itchy, hot and have some weeping. I will never use this product ever again. SURELY they have changed their formula……???

This product burned my skin and scalp really bad. My face is swollen. Is there a way to neutralize this effect? Do I need to go to the doctor or will this go away? It is very scary. My face looks unrecognizable.

Awful experience using this. After using this product several times it was brilliant. Just purchased a new box of medium brown and OMG, worst pain I have experienced. Itching, blisters, weeping, burning, skin to sensitive to touch. Will never buy this product again, they have got to of done something to the formula to all of a sudden have a problem with not just me but many users.

So happy I just discovered this thread. I’ve used JFM since August 2020 and was pleasantly surprised at the results of “Medium brown” After about 5-6 applications, the new box I purchased a few weeks ago burned my skin, caused a clear discharge on my pillows, itching, flaking and after using rubbing alcohol to try to reduce the burning I now have scabs under my beard. I’m glad to see this seems to be a commonality with other users of this product and I didn’t suddenly develop an allergy. I may look for legal representation after reading this helpful thread. I am very glad to have found this thread. Like others, a lot of these posts sound EXACTLY like my experience. I keep my beard very short and I thought THAT was the issue. The first box was great, and because I keep my beard short, I was able to get quit a few uses out of it. Box #2 same thing… but in December I bought a third and HOLY COW what an awful difference. Not as bad as some on here, but bumps, redness, INSANE itching….. I finally got up one night at 3am and shaved my face clean (which STILL didn’t take away the itching) and proceeded to water rinse my face 9 or 10 times over the next several hours. After 4 days, the itching is still there but not as bad. I will NEVER purchase this product again, I will have to find an alternative. Its unfortunate because at first, this was AMAZING. Now its horrible.

Been using the just for men green packet dye for dark brown black beard for years which actually has original recipe written on the box , but sent of for the same but was sent same dye but it had changed to a blue box and had new improved recipe on it , no problem I thought just a different box colour but holy crap the dye burnt my face weeping sores red rash severe itching only got better when I shaved beard off and just washed it with water which took about a month to heal , but never had a reaction like this before so I thought it might be something else , so I just did my sideburns just to see if it was the dye and yes my face blew up again same as before , couldn’t sleep at night for itching why did they change the formula I had no problem with my regular type , now by reading these comments I see it is a massive problem, are they doing anything about it ?? Not right and yes I did the patch on my arm no trouble but the skin on your arm isn’t as sensitive as the skin on your face .I am now looking for alternative dyes

Wow, I thought it was just me! I used Light Brown JFM yesterday and today my skin is all red and incredibly itchy with weeping sores and scabs all over my chin. I’m also in the UK and ordered it off of Amazon. They need to take it off of the market right now!

I need to find out how I can bring a lawsuit agianst JFM here in the UK, been using this product for years but after applying the product this week, it looked and smelled different and within a minute or so my face and neck started burning, I washed it off immediately and then the itching started, the next morning my face and neck were swollen and I had to shave my moustache and beard off, I was shocked to see that my skin was burned, discoloured and covered in small like pimples and a serious rash, the swelling is still really bad and my skin is sore to the touch.

Glad I found this thread. I have used the product for few years and only recently developed a hive like rash on my forehead and sides of my head. Beard itchy too. It takes a while go away. Went on vacation and didn’t use there. Everything cleared by the end. Got home and used again. Hives are back. Sucks.
