Amazon Instant Pot Lawsuit Claims Pressure Cooker Defects Caused Serious Injuries

Amazon Instant Pot Lawsuit Claims Pressure Cooker Defects Caused Serious Injuries

A product liability lawsuit claims that a defective Instant Pot pressure cooker sold through Amazon.com caused the customer to suffer serious burn injuries when the device malfunctioned.

The complaint (PDF) was brought by Christopher Rech in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado on March 20, naming Amazon.com Inc. as the sole defendant.

Electric pressure cookers like the Instant Pot are popular kitchen appliances that cook food quickly by trapping steam and building pressure inside a sealed container. When working properly, built-in safety features are designed to prevent the lid from opening while the contents remain pressurized.

However, pressure cooker explosion lawsuits allege that these safety mechanisms can fail, allowing the lid to open while pressure is still inside, which may cause scalding hot food and liquid to be forcefully expelled onto the user.

According to the complaint, Rech was using the Instant Pot for its intended purpose when the incident occurred.

However, the lawsuit indicates that the Instant Pot contained multiple design flaws that undermined its safety features, including mechanisms that allegedly allowed the lid to disengage even when the unit remained pressurized.

As a result, Rech claims the device created a false sense of security, leading users to believe it was safe to open the cooker when, in fact, it still contained dangerously hot and pressurized contents.

The complaint further alleges that Amazon played a direct role in the sale and distribution of the product, arguing that the company was not merely a third-party marketplace, but was actively involved in the transaction. According to the filing, Amazon processed the purchase, handled fulfillment and shipped the product to the consumer, placing it within the chain of distribution.

โ€œConsequently, the Plaintiff in this case seeks compensatory damages resulting from the use of Defendantโ€™s pressure cooker as described above, which has caused the Plaintiff to suffer from serious bodily injuries, medical expenses, physical pain, mental anguish, diminished enjoyment of life, and other damages.โ€

The lawsuit raises allegations of strict liability and negligence. It seeks damages for economic losses as well as pain and suffering.

Pressure Cooker Injury Lawsuits

Rechโ€™s case joins a growing number of pressure cooker lawsuits brought in recent years, involving a range of manufacturers and brands, including Instant Pot, SharkNinja, Crock-Pot, Farberware and others. Many of these complaints raise similar allegations that modern electric pressure cookers are prone to safety failures that allow users to open the lid while the contents remain pressurized.

These cases frequently claim that the appliances were marketed as having advanced safety features designed to prevent such incidents, yet those mechanisms failed to work as intended.

Federal safety regulators have also taken action in response to similar concerns. In recent years, recalls have been issued for more than one million Best Buy Insignia pressure cookers, as well as about 900,000 Sensio pressure cooker units, due to lid defects that could allow hot contents to escape, posing a risk of severe burn injuries.

These incidents often result in significant harm, including second- and third-degree burns, permanent scarring and long-term physical and emotional consequences.

As a result, pressure cooker injury attorneys are investigating potential claims on behalf of individuals who have been injured by pressure cooker explosions or malfunctions, focusing on whether manufacturers and sellers failed to properly design, test or warn about the risks associated with these devices.

Individuals who have experienced burn injuries or other complications following a pressure cooker incident may be eligible to pursue compensation for their damages, including medical costs, lost wages and pain and suffering.
